No. 22 Women's Basketball completes road upset of No. 4 Campbellsville, 73-65

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The 22nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team upset Mid-South Conference rival and No. 4-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) on Thursday night, 73-65, to get back on the winning track.

Kayla Styles led the Blue Raiders (21-5, 7-4 MSC) with 14 points and 13 rebounds to record her first double-double in a Lindsey Wilson uniform. Courtney Sandlin was one rebound shy of a double-double as she finished the game with 14 points and nine boards. Kayla Richardson was the final Blue Raider to reach double figures with 11 points against the Tigers (22-6, 9-4 MSC).

Over the first five minutes of the first quarter, both teams battled back-and-forth as the largest lead for either side was three points as the Tigers took a 7-4 advantage with 6:41 to play in the first quarter. Lindsey Wilson never led over the first five minutes, but they tied the game on three different occasions.

The Blue Raiders grabbed their first lead of the game at the 4:02 mark of the first quarter as Sandlin hit a three pointer from the corner to give Lindsey Wilson an 11-8 edge. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 18-8, which was sparked by a 12-0 run after Lindsey Wilson trailed 8-6.

Campbellsville chipped away at their deficit as they scored five of the final seven points of the first quarter. The Blue Raiders held a 20-13 lead after the first quarter.

A three pointer from Richardson to start the second quarter regained the 10-point lead for Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders took their largest lead of the first half at the 8:20 mark in the second quarter after basket from Cameron McPherson gave Lindsey Wilson a 25-13 lead.

Throughout the second quarter, the Tigers tried to chip away at their deficit but they could only come as close as seven points with 1:49 remaining in the first half. The Blue Raiders held a 38-30 lead at the half after Campbellsville made a layup at the buzzer.

Lindsey Wilson controlled the glass in the first half as they grabbed 25 rebounds compared to 11 from Campbellsville. The Blue Raiders shot 48.8 percent from the floor in the half, while the Tigers shot 35.2 percent and were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc.

To start the second half, Lindsey Wilson scored the first six points to extend their lead to 44-30, but Campbellsville knocked down their first three-pointer of the game to put an end to the Blue Raider run.

With Lindsey Wilson leading 50-35 with 5:21 left in the third quarter, both teams were held scoreless for nearly two minutes, but McPherson put an end to the drought with a layup at the 3:23 mark in the third quarter.

The largest lead of the game for Lindsey Wilson came with 1:18 left in the third quarter as they took a 57-39 lead. Coming into the contest, the largest deficit of the season for the Tigers was 14 points against Lyon (Ark.) on Nov. 28.

The Tigers stayed in the game as they scored the final six points of the quarter to cut their deficit to 57-45 heading into the fourth.

Campbellsville came within nine points in the early going of the fourth quarter, but the Blue Raiders regained their double-digit lead on their next possession. After Lindsey Wilson led 64-50, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to bring game within nine points once again at 4:25 mark of the fourth quarter.

Down the stretch, Campbellsville tried to slowly cut into their deficit as they made it a 69-61 game with 1:34 left in the quarter. Despite making four of their final 10 free throw attempts, Lindsey Wilson kept the Tigers at ease over the final 1:30 of regulation as the Blue Raiders came away with a 73-65 victory.

Lindsey Wilson shot an even 50 percent from the floor compared to 28.4 percent from Campbellsville. The Blue Raiders controlled the glass throughout the game as the held a 50-33 rebounding advantage over the Tigers.

This is the first time Lindsey Wilson has beat a top five ranked team since Dec. 14, 2014, which came at home against Campbellsville. The last time the Blue Raiders won on the road against the Tigers was on Jan. 31, 2008 and the victory on Thursday snapped a seven game skid against Campbellsville at the Powell Athletic Center.

The Blue Raiders now travels to St. Catharine (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT for their final road contest of the regular season.
