Box Score ST. CATHARINE, Ky. -- The 22nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team beat St. Catharine (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon, 69-47, to pick up their fifth-straight win on the road.
Chanel Roberts led the way for the Blue Raiders (22-5, 8-4 Mid-South Conference) with 19 points and Kayla Styles tallied her second-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Patriots (7-20, 1-13 MSC).
Both teams battled to grab momentum early in the game, as the lead changed hands four times over the first 3:45 of the game. After Chanel Roberts gave the Blue Raiders a 7-5 lead with 6:15 to play in the first quarter, Lindsey Wilson was able to hang on to the lead for the rest of the quarter.
Lindsey Wilson extended their lead to as many six as they held a 16-10 advantage of the Patriots with 15 seconds to play in the quarter. St. Catharine hit a pair of free throws to close out the period as Lindsey Wilson led 16-12 after the first quarter.
The Patriots started the second quarter of a 5-0 run to grab a 17-16 lead with 8:36 to play in the quarter. On the ensuing Blue Raider possession, Cameron McPherson put an end to the St. Catharine.
A seesaw battle ensued as the Patriots regained the lead once again, but Lindsey Wilson scored the next four points to regain their lead. Throughout the second quarter, the lead alternated sides six times and was tied three more times. After St. Catharine tied the game at 27-27 with 2:04 left in the first half, Lindsey Wilson scored the final five points of the half to take a 32-27 lead into the half.
The Blue Raiders shot 43.8 percent from the field in the half, but they were just 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. Both three-pointers in the half came from Heidi Huffman. The Patriots finished the first half shooting 42.1 percent from the floor and were 3-for-5 from three-point land.
To start the third quarter, Lindsey Wilson scored the first seven points of the period to take their first double-digit lead at 39-27 with 8:44 mark in the quarter. The Blue Raiders started to control the game as their largest lead of the quarter came with 2:55 left in the third quarter as the led by 17 points after a three-pointer from Malerie Martin.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Lindsey Wilson had a 53-38 advantage over St. Catharine.
The Blue Raiders continued to stretch their lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter as they took a 21-point lead with 6:35 left in regulation after a bucket by Roberts. The largest lead for Lindsey Wilson came with 1:40 left on the clock as Michelle Montgomery's basket in the paint gave the Blue Raiders a 69-45 lead. The Patriots scored once more in the final minute of play, but Lindsey Wilson came away with a 69-47 victory.
After shooting an even 50 percent in the second half, the Blue Raiders shot 46.8 percent for the game, while St. Catharine was 34.0 percent from field after they shot just 28.6 percent in the second half.
The Blue Raiders start their final week of the regular season on Thursday as they host Cumberlands (Ky.) at 6 p.m. CT.
