No. 19 Women's Basketball holds off Cumberlands in 72-66 win on Thursday night

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The 19th-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team took down Mid-South Conference foe, Cumberlands (Ky.), 72-66, on Thursday night.

Chanel Roberts led the Blue Raiders (23-5, 9-4 MSC) with 17 points and 10 rebounds to record her fifth double of the season. Teanna Curry and Courtney Sandlin each chipped in with 11 points each against the Patriots (11-14, 2-11 MSC). Lindsey Wilson was outrebounded in the game, 32-28. The 28 rebounds from the Blue Raiders tied their season low, which first occurred against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Dec. 3.

Lindsey Wilson started the game on a 12-2 run over the first 4:19 of the game to take their largest lead of the game. Cumberlands slowly worked their way back into the game as they cut their deficit to six points five different times in the first quarter. At the conclusion of the first quarter, Lindsey Wilson led 22-16.

The Patriots scored the first four points of the second quarter to pull within two points of the Blue Raiders with 8:25 to play in the quarter. Lindsey Wilson extended their lead once again as they took a 27-20 lead with 7:19 left in the first half.

The game of runs continued as Cumberlands battled back with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 27 points apiece at the 4:30 mark in the second quarter. Moments later the Patriots grabbed their first lead of the game, 30-29, with 3:43 left in the quarter. After Lindsey Wilson regained the lead on their next possession, Cumberlands hit a clutch three-pointer to take a 33-31 lead.

The Blue Raiders took a two-point lead with 1:10 to play in the first half, but Sarah Kelton knocked down a three just before the buzzer to give the Patriots a 36-35 lead heading into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 39.3 percent from Cumberlands. Both teams shot the ball well from the behind the arc as the Blue Raiders made 4-of-7 attempts and the Patriots were 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

A back-and-forth affair ensued at the beginning of the third quarter as the lead changed hands three times over the first 3:49 of play. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the third quarter as Lindsey Wilson made just 3-of-16 shots from the floor, compared to 4-of-17 from Cumberlands. The Patriots outscored the Blue Raiders in the third quarter 11-8 as they took their largest lead of the game, 47-43, heading into the fourth quarter.

Lindsey Wilson was held without a field goal over the last 6:15 of action in the third quarter, while the last Cumberlands field goal came at the 1:27 mark in the quarter.

To start the fourth quarter, the Blue Raiders went on 9-2 run over the first 3:19 of the quarter, as they regained the lead. The Patriots did not let the game slip away as the tied the game four times over the next four minutes, but they could not regain the lead.

Down the stretch, Lindsey Wilson was unable to pull away as their largest lead over the final five minutes of play was six points with four seconds to play. Cumberlands tried to make a comeback late in the game, but the Blue Raiders made their final nine free throws to secure a 72-66 victory.

For the game Lindsey Wilson shot 46.9 percent from the floor, while Cumberlands shot 33.3 percent. Both teams were strong at the free throw line as the Blue Raiders shot 91.3 percent and the Patriots shot 95.5 percent from the charity stripe

Lindsey Wilson clinched the third seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament as they sit at 9-4 with one conference game to play. Georgetown (Ky.) sits at 8-6 and No. 21 Pikeville (Ky.) is now 7-6 in conference play.

The Blue Raiders close out their conference schedule on Saturday afternoon as they host Pikeville at 2 p.m. CT for Senior Day.
