Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The third-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team opened up their home slate on Monday with a 5-4 victory over 18th-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.).
The Tigers (1-4) picked up the first point in the match as Alfonso Martinez and Tyler Cannon won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, over Collin Sparks and Javier Raya. The Blue Raiders (3-2) battled right back as Raul Mendez and Tomas Depiaggio picked up an 8-6 victory at doubles No. 1.
Lindsey Wilson took a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles play as Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
To start singles play, Olivet Nazarene tied the match for the second time as Martinez defeated Raya in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The match stayed close through the remainder of the remaining singles matches as Huertas gave the Blue Raiders a 3-2 lead after he won at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Tigers tied the match once again as Oscar Cornella edged out Mendez in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, as the match was all square at three with just three matches remaining.
Juan Morales gave Olivet Nazarene a 4-3 edge after he defeated Sparks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. The Tigers were just one match away from clinching the victory. Depiaggio kept Lindsey Wilson alive in the match as he won, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 single and he tied the match, 4-4.
With one match remaining, Tellez grabbed the second-consecutive straight set victory for the Blue Raiders as we won 6-4, 6-4 at singles No. 4 to seal a 5-4 victory for Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Friday as they host NCAA DI opponent, Austin Peay State (Tenn.), at 4 p.m. CT.
