No. 6 Men's Tennis picks up 6-3 win over Union on Wednesday

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team won their third-straight match as they defeated Union (Ky.), 6-3 on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Raiders (4-2) fell behind early as they trailed 2-1 after doubles play against the Bulldogs (3-5). Tomas Depiaggio and Raul Mendez picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Sam Jackson and Egil Brudvik edged out Collin Sparks and Javier Raya in doubles No. 3, 8-6.

The final doubles match went into a tiebreaker as Tiago Gil and Ignacio Tejerina came away with a 9-8 (7-2) victory over Ignacio Huertas and Alonso Tellez at No. 2 doubles.

At the start of singles play, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1 as Gil beat Sparks in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Lindsey Wilson stopped the Union run as Depiaggio won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to bring the Blue Raiders back within one.

Raya tied the match at three after he won 6-2, 6-0 at singles No. 4. The Blue Raiders regained the lead with Raul Mendez winning in straights over Tejerina at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Huertas clinched the victory for Lindsey Wilson with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Tellez won the final match for the Blue Raiders as he topped Borna Bartolovic in the only three-set match of the day, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9. Lindsey Wilson came away with a 6-3 team victory over Union.

The Blue Raiders return to action on March 19 as they host Pikeville (Ky.) in their first Mid-South Conference match of the year, starting at 1 p.m. CT.
