Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis opened Mid-South Conference play with a bang today, defeating No. 22-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) 8-1 at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders (7-2, 1-0 in the Mid-South) claimed two of the three doubles points and won all six singles matches to win their sixth consecutive match. Cumberland drops to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
The tandem of Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez -- ranked No. 7 in NAIA doubles -- got the Blue Raiders off to a quick start in the top-seeded match. The Lindsey Wilson duo cruised to an 8-4 win over Thiago Lopes and Axel Lucich for the 1-0 lead.
Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas pushed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0 with an 8-5 win over Jakov Tshirkin and Anatoliy Lashkul in the third-seeded doubles match.
The Phoenix claimed their only point of the day in the second-seeded doubles match. Jose Ortega Vela and Dylan Nelson outlasted Tomas Depiaggio and Javier Raya 7-4 in the tiebreaker to win the match 9-8.
Tellez claimed the first point in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lucich for a 3-1 Lindsey Wilson advantage. The win was his team-high seventh straight in singles play this season.
Mendez notched the second singles win of the day in the second-seeded match to put the Blue Raiders within a point of winning the team match. He posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lopes for the 4-1 lead.
Huertas capped the team win for the Blue Raiders with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tshirkin in the fourth-seeded match. Huertas improves to 7-2 with the win, including winning six straight.
Porcic -- who won a three-set thriller -- Depiaggio and Raya also picked up wins this afternoon.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 29, as the Blue Raiders host Campbellsville (Ky.) at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
