Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – The 18th-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.), 61-52, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Mid-South Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Chanel Roberts led the Blue Raiders (26-5) with 17 points, while Kayla Styles and Teanna Curry each tallied 13 points. Styles recorded a game-high eight rebounds as she just missed out on her fourth double-double of the season.
Lindsey Wilson opened the game on a 12-2 run over the first 6:15 of the game. Moments later the Blue Raiders grabbed their largest lead of the game at 14-3 after a bucket from Styles.
The Phoenix (17-11) scored the final four points of the quarter to cut their deficit to seven heading into the second quarter.
Cumberland continued their comeback as they went on a 9-1 run to start the second quarter as they took their first lead of the game at 16-15, with 5:02 to play in the quarter. The lead changed hands two more times over the final minutes of the second quarter as the Phoenix led 21-20 at the half.
The Blue Raiders shot just 24.2 percent from the floor in the first half, while Cumberland shot 25 percent. Neither team hit a three-pointer in the half as Lindsey Wilson was 0-for-6 and the Phoenix were 0-for-4.
Early in the third quarter, the Blue Raiders regained the lead and they were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the quarter. Lindsey Wilson extended their lead to as many as six points in the quarter, but Cumberland did not let the game get away from them as they tied the game at 35 with 54 second left in the third quarter.
Lindsey Wilson scored the final three points of the period as they led 38-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Phoenix went on a 5-1 run to open the fourth quarter as they grabbed a 40-39 lead at the 7:41 mark of the quarter. The Blue Raiders came back with an 8-1 run as they regained the lead and never looked back for the remainder of the game. With Lindsey Wilson leading 48-41, Cumberland looked to make another comeback as they pulled within two points, 49-47, with 3:22 left in regulation.
The Blue Raiders kept the Phoenix at ease as they made eight of their final 10 free throws to secure a 61-52 victory.
In the second half, Lindsey Wilson shot 50 percent from the floor as they finished the game shooting 35.6 percent. Cumberland finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor after they shot 46.4 percent in the second half.
With the win on Thursday, the Blue Raiders set a new program record for wins in a season with 26. The win also snaps a four-game losing streak in the MSC Tournament and they are making their first appearance in the tournament semifinals since the 2011-12 season.
Lindsey Wilson now gears up for a semifinal match up against Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.
