Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — No. 7 Lindsey Wilson men's tennis won 7-2 over Cumberlands (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference road match on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (9-3, 3-0 MSC) won 2-of-3 doubles matches and 5-of-6 singles matches to defeat Cumberlands (7-8, 3-3 MSC).
The Blue Raiders fell behind 1-0 when the pair of Javier Raya and Tomas Depiaggio fell 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles match to the Patriots' Leonardo De Mello Couto and Yusuke Matsuoka.
The Blue Raiders rebounded to win the remaining two doubles matches. Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez edged out Ariez Heshaam and Daniel Fraser 9-8 (10-8) in the No. 1 doubles match to tie the team score at 1-1. In the No. 2 doubles match, Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas prevailed 8-6 over the Patriots' Aatu Merenheimo and Daniel Butcher to make the score 2-1.
Lindsey Wilson would not relinquish the lead.
In the first singles match to finish, Mendez recorded a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory against Butcher in the No. 2 match to put the Blue Raiders up 3-1. Tellez followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fraser in the No. 3 singles match. The Blue Raiders clinched the team victory when Huertas won the No. 4 singles match over Merenheimo to make the lead 5-1. The match score was 6-3, 4-6, 2-1 when Merenheimo retired giving Huertas the victory.
Porcic and Depiaggio also won matches for the Blue Raiders to make the score 7-1. Porcic narrowly defeated Heshaam 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the top-seeded singles match, and Depiaggio came from behind to win 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5) in the No. 5 singles match.
Alberto Rosas won the lone singles match for Cumberlands with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Raya to make the final team score 7-2 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders return to the court for a non-conference neutral-site match with No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan in Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
