Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson captured the 2016 Mid-South Conference Men's Tennis Tournament title today with a 5-1 win over Cumberlands (Ky.) at Kereiakes Park.
The tournament title is the 13th for the Blue Raiders in 14 years. The lone year Lindsey Wilson did not win the title, the Mid-South Conference participated in a NAIA unaffiliated group and did not have a conference tournament.
Lindsey Wilson (16-3) claims the MSC's automatic bid into next month's NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama.
Each of the three doubles matches was competitive.
Lindsey Wilson grabbed the early advantage in the second and third seeded matches while Cumberlands (13-6) collected a break midway through the top-seeded match.
Lindsey Wilson's Tomas Depiaggio and Javier Raya made the most of their early break in the third-seeded match en route to an 8-6 win over Yusuke Matsuoka and Leo Couto.
After being down a break in the top-seeded match, Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez -- ranked sixth in the NAIA in doubles -- battled back to win four of the last five games to win 9-7 over Ariez Heshaam and Daniel Fraser. The win gave Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 lead.
Cumberlands grabbed the final doubles point with a tremendous comeback.
Daniel Butcher and Aatu Merenheimo won the last five games to overcome a 7-4 deficit and beat Ignacio Huertas and Alonso Tellez 9-7 in the second-seeded match.
Lindsey Wilson led 2-1 at the end of doubles.
The Blue Raiders needed just three singles matches to close out the 5-1 win.
Huertas claimed the first singles win for the Blue Raiders in the fourth-seeded match. He posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Matsuoka for the 3-1 lead.
Tomas Depiaggio added a fourth Lindsey Wilson point in the fifth-seeded match. Depiaggio upended Merenheimo 6-3, 6-0 to put the Blue Raiders within a point of the championship.
Tellez provided the decisive point in the third-seeded match, beating Fraser 6-4, 6-2 for the 5-1 Lindsey Wilson win.
The remainder of the matches was halted after the Blue Raiders reached five points.
The NAIA National Tournament field will be released on May 9, with the tournament bracket released on May 10. The national tournament begins on May 17 at the Mobile Tennis Center.
