Box Score MOBILE, Ala. -- The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team defeated Aquinas (Mich.) by a 5-1 margin in an NAIA National Championship Tournament Second Round match on Wednesday night at the Mobile Tennis Center.
After the first round of play on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather and slick courts, No. 10-ranked Aquinas (23-8) had to defeat No. 23 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) in a first round match on Wednesday morning following additional weather delays to earn a spot in the second round against the Blue Raiders.
As play began late on Wednesday night, the No. 7-ranked Blue Raiders (16-3) and Saints both battle hard in competitive doubles matches.
Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez started Lindsey Wilson off with a win at the top doubles flight over Kristoff Saari and Gunnar Peery by an 8-4 margin for the 1-0 lead. Aquinas countered by winning a hard-fought match at the No. 3 position after Andy Struble and Evan Taylor defeated Javier Raya and Tomas Depiaggio 9-7 to even the score at 1-1. Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas then put the Blue Raiders ahead with a 9-8 win at No. 2 over Daymom Johnson and Chase Peery to take a 2-1 advantage into singles play.
Porcic and Tellez then gave the Blue Raiders a 4-1 lead after 6-1, 6-1 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions, respectively, before Depiaggio finished things off with a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to clinch the match and the 5-1 victory for Lindsey Wilson.
The victory moves Lindsey Wilson into the NAIA National Quarterfinals for the fourth-consecutive year where the Blue Raiders will face No. 2-ranked Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT.
