Women's Basketball defeats Fisk 74-51, improves to 20-0

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team made it 20 wins in a row on Tuesday evening as the Blue Raiders beat Fisk (Tenn.) 74-51 at Biggers Sports Center.

Despite a rough shooting night for the Blue Raiders (20-0), the stingy Lindsey Wilson defense forced 30 turnovers by the Bulldogs (4-13), the most by an opponent this season, which turned into 27 LWC points. Lindsey Wilson shot just 31.4 percent in the first half, but bounced back with a 55.2 mark in the final two quarters to bring their total for the game to 42.2 percent.

It was a lackluster start to the game for the Blue Raiders who never seemed to find a rhythm on the offensive end during the opening 20 minutes of play. The two teams combined for just 10 points in the first five minutes of the game and Lindsey Wilson did not lead until the 3:47 mark of the opening quarter following a Kayla Styles basket.

The Blue Raiders put together a string of eight points early in the second quarter to take a 25-14 lead before a Fisk three pointer ended the run. Lindsey Wilson remained out of sorts throughout the quarter, turning the ball over and missing shots from right underneath the basket, but Fisk was unable to capitalize due to the Bulldogs committing 19 turnovers in the opening half. Despite the struggles, the Blue Raiders took a 31-25 lead into halftime.

By the end of the half, Lindsey Wilson shot just 31.4 percent from the field and made just 3-of-15 attempts from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders had 11 turnovers and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, but only managed to turn those into 11 second-chance points.

Fisk shot 47.4 percent from the floor and hit four three pointers as LeShae Brown led all scorers with 11 points.

The Blue Raiders came out firing from the break, scoring seven-straight points to build a double-digit lead over the Bulldogs. Lindsey Wilson extended that lead to as many as 15 after a Malerie Martin free throw at the 6:28 mark made it 45-30, and again at 47-32 after a Chanel Roberts basket. The Blue Raiders kept that double-digit lead through the end of the quarter at 53-40 thanks to a 61.5 shooting percentage in the quarter.

The teams went through an exchange of baskets in the final quarter, but Fisk was never able to cut the game closer than 12 points, and the Blue Raiders pushed the lead to as many as 23 following a basket from Hannah DeBruin with 16 seconds to play.

Roberts scored a team-high 21 points in the win. Styles also finished in double figures with 10, missing out on a double-double by one rebound. Martin matched a career high with 10 rebounds. Heidi Huffman added nine points, all coming from beyond the arc.

Brown led Fisk in the loss with 18 points, followed by Khadijah Alexander with 15 points. Jada Jones had seven points, but no other Bulldog had more than three points.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday for a 6 p.m. CT matchup against Hiwassee (Tenn.) at Biggers Sports Center.
