Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated 25th-ranked Talladega 70-55 in a top-25 matchup Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.
The Blue Raiders (8-1) were led by Kayla Styles who recorded her third double-double of the season scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Heidi Huffman scored a season-high 17 points while making a season-high five shots from beyond the arc. Reagan Turner added 15 points and matched a season-high in assists with five. Molly Stone and Gerda Paulauskaite each grabbed 10 rebounds. Paulauskaite recorded six blocked shots.
Lindsey Wilson outshot the Tornadoes (8-4) 34.5 percent to 28.6 percent and limited Talladega to just 2-of-15 shooting from three. The Blue Raiders recorded seven blocked shots in the game. The Tornadoes held a 32-20 edge in points in the paint and 45-19 advantage in bench points with Lindsey Wilson having a slight 51-47 edge in rebounds.
After a Styles basket to open the game, Talladega went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 lead with 5:24 to play in the first quarter. The Tornadoes went on a quick 6-3 run to hold a 15-10 advantage with 2:06 to play in the quarter. The Blue Raiders answered back with a 5-0 run of their own to end the quarter and tie the game up at 15.
Lindsey Wilson was limited to just 33.3 percent from the field while Talladega shot 43.8 percent in the first quarter. Styles led the way in the quarter with seven points while Huffman scored six points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc.
After a back-and-forth start to the second quarter that saw Talladega take a 21-20 lead, the Blue Raiders went on a 7-0 run propelled by Styles who scored five of those points. The Tornadoes would responded right back and tie things up at 27 with a 6-0 run of their own. Lindsey Wilson took a 31-27 lead into halftime after closing out the first half scoring the last four points.
Styles who scored 10 points in the second quarter, led all scorers with 17 at the half. She converted on 7-of-8 free throw attempts in the first half. The Blue Raiders were outshot 31.3 percent to 29.4 percent from the field in the half.
Lindsey Wilson opened the second half on a 10-3 run helped by two Huffman three pointers to give the Blue Raiders a 41-30 lead with 5:54 to play in the third quarter. Talladega used a quick 7-2 run to cut the LWC lead to six points at 43-37 with just over three minutes to play. Trailing 44-37, the Tornadoes used an 8-1 run to tie the game at 45. Huffman hit a three with 12 seconds to play in the third to give the Blue Raiders a 48-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Blue Raiders began to pull away after opening the final quarter on a 10-2 run increasing their lead to 58-47. Lindsey Wilson scored seven of the game's last 11 points to secure the 70-55 victory. The Blue Raiders shot 41.7 percent from the field in the second half and limited the Tornadoes to just 26.8 percent. Lindsey Wilson prevented Talladega from converting a shot from beyond the on 10 attempts in the half while converting on 4-of-9 attempts.
Sydnee Clark was one of three Talladega players in double figures with 14. Carla Clemmons added 12 points while Courtnee Williams scored 11.
The Blue Raiders are back in action on Dec. 11 when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take on Carver College (Ga.) at 3 p.m. CT.
