Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team edged out No. 7-ranked William Carey (Miss.) by a 5-4 margin on Thursday afternoon at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts.
The difference in the match was the Blue Raiders (2-1) capturing two out of three doubles points over the Crusaders (0-1) as the two squads evenly split the six singles matches.
Cobi Ho and Ivan Solans Diaz gave the Blue Raiders an early 1-0 lead after winning the third-seeded doubles match 8-4 over Lucien Samitier and Xavier de Vresse. Vladyslav Ladygin and Hugo Robuchon brought the match level after defeating Javier Raya and Filip Persson 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles match, but Denis Porcic and Tomas Depiaggio responded with an 8-6 win at the top flight over Christian Hansson and Andreas Brune to give LWC a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, a lead that would not be relinquished.
Porcic, who ranks No. 5 in the ITA National Rankings, defeated No. 15-ranked Ladygin at the top singles flight 6-2, 6-3 to push the overall match lead to 3-1. Depiaggio (No. 49) followed suit with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hansson at the No. 3 match to put the Blue Raiders within a point of clinching the win.
The Crusaders battled back and won the next two matches to cut the lead down to a single point at 4-3. Ho suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback to Samitier at the fourth-seeded singles match and Persson fell 6-3, 6-4 to Paul Chabaud at the No. 5 match. But Raya came through in the clutch at the No. 6 singles match against de Vresse. After outlasting de Vresse 7-5 in the opening set, Raya put forth a clean 6-0 sweep in the second set to seal the win for the Blue Raiders. Solans Diaz eventually fell after a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 singles match (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) to Robuchon to salvage the final point for William Carey.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action of Friday for a pair of matches. The Blue Raiders face No. 16-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.) at 11 a.m. CT followed by a 5 p.m. CT matchup with NCAA Division II member Armstrong State (Ga.).
