Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season schedule with a 79-56 victory over Georgetown (Ky.) on Senior Day on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.
With the victory, the No. 2-ranked Blue Raiders (28-1, 13-1 MSC) are regular season co-champions of the Mid-South Conference. Shawnee State (Ohio) also captured a share of the MSC regular season title as both squads finished with 13-1 conference records. Based on tiebreaking procedures, the Blue Raiders will be the No. 2 seed at next week's conference tournament.
The senior class showed strong in their final appearance at Biggers Sports Center as Chanel Roberts led all scorers with 18 points. Kayla Richardson finished with 14 points while Courtney Sandlin scored a season-high 12. Sophomores J'Nayah Hall and Teanna Curry finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sandlin also recorded a career-high four steals while Malerie Martin had a team-high six rebounds.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm right out of the gate as Lindsey Wilson led just 9-4 with 1:33 to play in the opening quarter. Georgetown closed the gap to three, but a pair of Hall free throws gave the Blue Raiders a 14-8 lead following the first 10 minutes of play. Both teams managed just three made field goals in the opening quarter.
Lindsey Wilson found that offensive rhythm in the second quarter, extending the lead to double digits for the first time at the 6:15 mark following a Teanna Curry basket to make it 24-14. Late in the quarter, the Blue Raiders scored on four-straight possessions to help lift their halftime advantage to 36-22.
The Lindsey Wilson lead would not fall below double digits the remainder of the game. The Blue Raiders continued to send the ball into the paint where they hit 8-of-17 shots to outscore the Tigers by five in the third quarter, missing their lone attempt from deep. Lindsey Wilson made 6-of-7 free throw attempts in the quarter, part of a 21-for-24 effort on the day from the charity stripe as the LWC lead swelled to 58-38 heading to the final quarter.
The Blue Raiders put things out of reach for good in the fourth as they opened the frame on a 12-2 run capped off by a Roberts field goal to make it 70-40 with 5:56 to play. The 30-point lead would be the largest of the game which the Blue Raiders accomplished three times, including after a Hannah DeBruin three pointer with 2:45 to play.
Both Lindsey Wilson and Georgetown finished the contest shooting an even 40 percent from the field and the Blue Raiders made just two attempts from beyond the arc. Emilie Ziese led the Tigers with 15 points in the loss.
Prior to the start of the contest, Richardson, Roberts, Sandlin, Billie Hearn and Michelle Montgomery, along with the junior varsity senior student-athletes were honored for their contributions to the women's basketball program and Lindsey Wilson College.
The Blue Raiders now begin preparations for the MSC Tournament set to begin on March 2 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Kentucky.
