Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team secured a spot in the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Quarterfinals after a 5-2 victory over the University of Mobile (Ala.) on Wednesday in the NAIA Second Round at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The sixth-seeded Blue Raiders (17-6) now face third-seeded Keiser (Fla.) in the quarterfinals with first serve set for 9 a.m. CT on Thursday.
Lindsey Wilson held a slight 2-1 lead heading into singles play after a hotly-contested doubles competition.
Ivan Solans Diaz and Tomas Depiaggio captured the first point for Lindsey Wilson after taking down Gabriel Cleto and Marc-Nunez Del Prado at the third-doubles flight 8-2. The Rams (21-4) battled back with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles match when Jonah Jakubec and Nick Van Amerom defeated Javier Raya and Filip Persson to level the match at 1-1.
It came down to the top singles flight where Denis Porcic and Alonso Tellez battled with Mark Simons and Tim Buehler. The match came down to the wire but the Blue Raider duo finally prevailed with a 9-8 (4) victory to give LWC the edge heading to singles play 2-1.
In singles play, Porcic made quick work of Javier Ahumada at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep to make it a 3-1 Blue Raider lead, his 11th-straight singles victory. Solans Diaz then brought LWC with one point of victory after edging out Jakubec at the No. 2 singles matchup 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, stretching his singles-win streak to 10.
Mobile grabbed one more point after Buehler defeated Tellez at the No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-2, but Depiaggio brought home the team win after his three-set victory over Simons at the No. 3 matchup 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to send LWC to the 5-2 match win.
Both Raya and Persson were leading in their third sets when the match was concluded.
Lindsey Wilson faces Keiser in the NAIA National Quarterfinals on Thursday at 9 a.m. CT.
