Box Score BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson football continued its season theme of dominant second halves as the Blue Raiders raced past host Union (Ky.) 68-26 tonight at Williamson Stadium.
Leading 28-20 at the break, the sixth-ranked Blue Raiders scored 40 straight points over the final two quarters to improve to 3-0 on the season. Only a last-second Union touchdown spoiled the second-half shutout. The score is the first points surrendered by the Lindsey Wilson defense this season following the break.
Trailing 7-0 and 13-6 in the opening quarter, Lindsey Wilson actually started its streak in the second quarter.
Allen Cooks scored the first of two touchdowns on the night on a reverse and Dylan Beasley followed with a quarterback draw for a touchdown to give the Blue Raiders their first lead of the night, 19-13, just shy of the midway point of the second quarter.
Beasley added the first of his four touchdown tosses on the next Lindsey Wilson drive to extend the lead. Beasley -- who finished the game 22-of-30 for 314 yards -- found Charles Gaines streaking up the sideline for the score and a 25-13 lead.
Gaines ended the game with a team-high six catches for 79 yards and the score. For Beasley, he recorded his 10th career 300-yard passing game -- one shy of the program record.
Union (2-2) responded as Kendrick Furness -- in for the injured Alex Bell -- hit Tyler Toombs for an 85-yard touchdown to pull the Bulldogs within 25-20. Toombs caught five passes for a game-high 134 yards.
Jared Dougherty took back the momentum for the Blue Raiders 80 seconds later. He connected on his second field goal in as many tries this season -- this one from 35 yards -- as the first-half clock expired to push the Blue Raiders in front 28-20 at the break.
It was all Lindsey Wilson in the second half.
Offensively, Lindsey Wilson scored six touchdowns -- three rushing and three passing. Defensively, after allowing more than 300 total yards in the first half, the Lindsey Wilson defense surrendered just 100 yards on 37 plays in the second half.
The Blue Raiders finished the game out-gaining the Bulldogs 583 to 439 on 11 fewer plays.
Touchdown catches by Cooks, Mikey Davis and Cam Wyche extended the Lindsey Wilson lead to 49-20 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
TiCorion Williams added back-to-back rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter -- his second and third of the season -- and Xavier Abernathy found the end zone for the first time in his career late in the game for the 68-20 lead.
Trent Mueller led a balanced Blue Raider defense with 14 tackles -- his third straight double-digit tackle game. Jamar Brooks added his second interception of the season while the Blue Raiders recorded a season-high four sacks -- one each from C.J. Dickerson, Romie Dukes, Damani Jenkins and Quamea Jones. Lindsey Wilson also had eight tackles for a loss in the game.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 23, as No. 10-ranked Southeastern (Fla.) visits Blue Raider Stadium.
