Women's basketball gets past Pikeville 73-65 on Saturday

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated Pikeville (Ky.) 73-65 in a Mid-South Conference matchup on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (14-3, 2-1 MSC) were a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line over the final 1:14 to help secure the victory. Lindsey Wilson had four players in double figures led by Kayla Styles who recorded her ninth double-double of the season scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Reagan Turner added 19 points and made a career-high 11 free throws on 13 attempts. Heidi Huffman scored 11 points and made three shots from beyond the arc and Devin Cheatum added 10. Jynea Harris scored a season-high eight points.

Lindsey Wilson was outshot by Pikeville (8-10, 0-3 MSC) 47.2 percent to 40.8 percent while the Bears connected on seven shots from beyond the arc and the Blue Raiders only made four. Lindsey Wilson went 29-of-33 from the free throw line and forced 15 Pikeville turnovers on seven steals.

The two teams traded threes to begin the game as the Bears made their first seven shots of the quarter and used a 9-2 run to take a 17-14 lead with 3:01 remaining. Lindsey Wilson used a quick 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-20 before Aundrea Matchen put the Bears up 23-20 with a basket at the end of the quarter.

Styles led the way in the quarter with 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting making one shot from beyond the arc and all four of her attempts from the foul line. Pikeville went 9-of-13 from the field in the first quarter as Lindsey Wilson connected on 6-of-14 from the field. The Blue Raiders were a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Trailing 28-23 with 6:28 to play in the first half, Lindsey Wilson went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-28 lead with 5:07 to play in the second quarter. After Pikeville took a 31-30 lead Lindsey Wilson scored six consecutive points to lead 36-31 with 2:50 to play in the half. Pikeville tied the game at 37 with a 6-1 run with under two minutes to play in the half. The Blue Raiders closed out the half with a 6-1 run of their own to take a 43-38 lead into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson shot 42.9 percent in the half and connected on 4-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders shot 93.8 percent from the free throw line in the half connecting of 15-of-16 attempts. Pikeville went 14-of-23 in the half and was 4-of-6 from three. Matchen led all scorers at the half with 17 on 7-of-8 shooting while Styles had 16 on 3-of-3 shooting and was 9-of-9 from the free throw line.

The Bears went on a 7-2 run to begin the third quarter to cut the lead to 46-45 with 6:36 remaining. Lindsey scored four quick points to take a 50-45 lead before Pikeville tied things up with a 5-0 run of its own with 3:40 remaining in the quarter. Lindsey Wilson scored the last three points of the quarter to take a 53-50 lead into the final quarter.

Pikeville opened the final quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 56-53 lead with 7:53 to play. Lindsey Wilson retook the lead at 64-59 with an 11-3 run that elapsed 5:48. The Blue Raiders closed out the game connecting on all nine of their free throw attempts over the last 1:14 of the game. Turner connected on all seven of her attempts during that stretch.

Three Bears were in double figures led by Matchen who scored a team-high 20 points. Rachel Lee scored 14 points while Jamie Castle added 13.
