Women's Basketball defeats Cumberland 67-51 in MSC opener on Saturday

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team opened up Mid-South Conference play with a 67-51 victory against Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

Kayla Styles led the way for the Blue Raiders (13-2, 1-0 MSC) with a game-high 26 points with five rebounds and three blocks. Teanna Curry chipped in with 16 points and Reagan Turner added 15. Lindsey Wilson shot 48.6 percent from the filed while limiting Cumberland (11-5, 0-1 MSC) to just 37.5 percent. The Blue Raiders connected on 4-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and limited the Phoenix to just 2-of-19 from three.

Curry scored the first eight points for the Blue Raiders to put Lindsey Wilson out in front 8-6 with 6:13 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Raiders ended the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 19-10 lead. Lindsey Wilson shot 7-of-13 from the field making one shot beyond the arc and converting on all four of its free throw attempts. The Blue Raiders limited the Phoenix to just 5-of-15 shooting in the quarter.

Cumberland opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 20-16 with under eight minutes to play in the half. The Phoenix again got the Blue Raider lead to one point at 27-26 with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Lindsey Wilson closed out the half on a 4-1 run to take a 31-27 lead.

Styles led the way at the half with 12 points while Curry was also in double figures with 10. The Blue Raiders shot 12-of-26 in the half while Cumberland was 12-of-27. Lindsey Wilson shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line in the half and had a 17-13 edge in rebounds.

The Blue Raiders opened up the third quarter on an 8-3 run to increase their lead to 39-30. Lindsey Wilson ended the third quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 48-38 lead into the final quarter. After the Phoenix opened up the fourth quarter with a basket, Lindsey Wilson went on a 9-2 run increasing the lead 57-42. The two teams continued to trade baskets for the rest of the quarter as the Blue Raiders came away with the 67-51 victory.

Lindsey Wilson shot 52.4 percent in the second half and limited the Phoenix to just 9-of-29 shooting. The Blue Raiders did not allow a Cumberland three point shot on nine attempts in the half.

Kyra Tucker scored a team-high 17 points for Cumberland.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday when they travel to No. 4-ranked Shawnee State (Ohio) at 5 p.m. CT.
