Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Javier Raya battled back from a set down in the decisive match to help No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis beat host Cumberlands (Ky.) 5-4 today at the UC Tennis Courts.
Raya -- who trailed Rodrigo Rattle after falling 6-4 in the first set -- won the last two sets 6-1, 6-2 to give the Blue Raiders the win in both team's Mid-South Conference opener.
Lindsey Wilson (3-0, 1-0 in the Mid-South) took two of the three doubles points to take a 2-1 lead entering singles play.
Denis Porcic and Camilo Erazo put the Blue Raiders up 1-0 after an 8-1 win over Aatu Merenheimo and Luis Montull in the top-seeded doubles match. Rattle and Eric Banoub evened the match with an 8-1 win over Steven Espinoza and Mac Montgomery in the third-seeded match.
Ivan Solans Diaz and Javier Raya nudged the Blue Raiders in front after doubles play with a tight 8-6 win over Yusuke Matsuoka and Martin Barbier in the second-seeded doubles match.
Banoub quickly pulled the Patriots even at 2-2 with a win over Montgomery in the six-seeded match.
Porcic -- ranked No. 4 in the NAIA -- pushed the Blue Raiders lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Matsuoka in the top-seeded match.
Erazo moved the Blue Raiders within a point of the team win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Merenheimo in the second-seeded match.
But the Patriots (1-5, 0-1) evened the match at 4-4 with wins at the third and fourth singles matches, setting up the Raya heroics.
Raya's come-from-behind effort helped him move to 2-0 on the season in singles play.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, March 24, as the Blue Raiders host No. 19 Cumberland (Tenn.) at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
