Doubles sweep leads Men's Tennis to 6-3 win over Cumberlands

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-3 win over Cumberlands (Ky.) in a non-conference match at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.

Lindsey Wilson never trailed in the match en route to improving to 6-0 on the season. The win is the second this season over the Patriots (4-8). The Blue Raiders defeated Cumberlands 5-4 on March 9 in Williamsburg in this season's conference match with the Patriots.

The Blue Raiders seized control of the match winning all three doubles matches.

Denis Porcic and Camilo Erazo posted an 8-4 win over Yusuke Matsuoka and Martin Barbier in the top-seeded match. Ivan Solans Diaz and Javier Raya followed with an 8-3 win over Aatu Merenheimo and Luis Montull to give the Blue Raiders the 2-0 lead.

Edberg Espinoza and Steven Espinoza outlasted Rodrigo Rattle and Eric Banoub in the third-seeded match in a tiebreaker. The Blue Raider pair won the tiebreaker 7-5 to take the match 9-8 and give Lindsey Wilson the 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Porcic quickly pushed the lead to 4-0 with the first singles victory of the day. He improved to 5-1 on the season with the 6-3, 6-4 win over Merenheimo in the No. 1 singles match.

Barbier posted the first win of the day for the Patriots in the second-seeded match. He came back from a set down to beat Erazo 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Diaz captured the decisive point in the third-seeded match that also went the distance. He beat Matsuoka 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to move his singles record this season to 4-2 and give Lindsey Wilson the fifth team point in the match.

Edberg Espinoza cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Montull in the fourth-seeded match to move to 4-1 this season in singles play. It was the lone match of the singles that featured a pair of nationally ranked players. Espinoza is No. 23 in the NAIA while Montull is No. 45.

Cumberlands grabbed the final two matches of the day -- winning the fifth-seeded match after Raya retired early in the match and the sixth-seeded match in a superset tiebreaker.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2 p.m. CT on Tuesday, April 3, as the Blue Raiders host No. 11 Campbellsville (Ky.) at Baughman Tennis Complex.
