Men's Tennis falls to Reinhardt at national championship

Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. -- Third-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's tennis fell 5-2 to 14th-seeded Reinhardt (Ga.) today in the NAIA National Tournament's second round at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The loss -- the first of the season for the Blue Raiders -- ends Lindsey Wilson's season at 14-1. Reinhardt (17-3) advances to face Cumberland (Tenn.) later tonight in the national quarterfinals.

Reinhardt grabbed a 2-1 lead following doubles play.

Lindsey Wilson got on the board first as Denis Porcic and Camilo Erazo -- who is ranked sixth in the NAIA in doubles -- cruised to an 8-1 win over 15th-ranked Fabio Pereira and Mario Belloni Tomas in the top-seeded match.

Porcic and Erazo close the season with a perfect 13-0 record as a doubles team.

Reinhardt's Sam Alexander and Brandon Lane evened the team match with a win at three doubles. The Eagle tandem posted an 8-3 win over Edberg Espinoza and Steven Espinoza.

The second-seeded match proved to be high drama as both teams battled to seize an advantage entering singles play.

Reinhardt's Myrohn Miranda and Bruno Juarez led for the majority of the match only to have Ivan Solans Diaz and Javier Raya pull within a game twice, including 6-7 late in the match.

But the Eagles held serve in what proved to be the last game of the match to take an 8-6 win to give Reinhardt the 2-1 lead.

The highly-competitive match continued into the singles matches as each team posted three opening-set wins in the six singles matches.

Reinhardt claimed the first singles point while taking a 3-1 lead after Alexander defeated Steven Espinoza 6-2, 7-5 in the sixth-seeded match.

Diaz -- who posted the most impressive showing in the opening set -- capped a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets win over Nikita Hrynov in the fourth-seeded match. With the win, Diaz improved to 9-4 on the season in singles

Tomas inched the Eagles within a point of the upset with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Raya -- who closed his doubles match and played all of his singles match on an injured ankle.

Raya tweaked his ankle in the early stages of the doubles match while retrieving a loose ball after a point had ended.

Reinhardt closed out the team match as Miranda defeated Erazo 6-4, 7-5 in the second-seeded match. Miranda broke Erazo's serve -- after Erazo had saved one match point earlier in the set -- to push the Eagles into the quarterfinals. Erazo closes his freshman season with a 12-2 singles record.

Porcic and Edberg Espinoza were each leading their match when play was halted after Reinhardt claimed its fifth team point.

Porcic -- who is fifth in the NAIA -- led the only ranked battle of the singles matches. He led 47th-ranked Pereira 6-4, 5-4 in the top-singles match. Edberg Espinoza led Bruno Juarez 6-4, 6-5 in the third-seeded match.

Porcic and Edberg Espinoza conclude their Lindsey Wilson careers with today's team loss.

Porcic finishes with an all-time singles record of 62-10 and a doubles mark of 64-14. The 62 singles wins and 64 doubles wins are both second all-time in the program's history. Edberg Espinoza caps his three-year career with a singles mark of 40-8 and doubles record of 44-12.
