Women's Basketball bests Cumberland in MSC opener 78-56

CUMBERLAND, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team opened Mid-South Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 78-56 victory against Cumberland (Tenn.) at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Blue Raiders (10-4, 1-0 MSC) managed to force Cumberland (4-9, 0-1 MSC) into 19 turnovers after tallying 11 steals on the afternoon and dominated the glass, out rebounding the Phoenix 50-35, including 20-10 for offensive boards.

LWC managed to shoot 38.4 percent from the floor while limiting Cumberland to connecting on just 16-of-54 made field goal for a 29.6 shooting percentage in the game. Lindsey Wilson was also efficient from the charity stripe as they made 14-of-16 attempts.

Reagan Turner led the charge scoring a game-high 20 points after going a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line. J'Nayah Hall and Jynea Harris both managed 13 points while Heidi Huffman added 12 of her own. Gerda Paulauskaite recorded a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Lindsey Wilson managed to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead after Hall scored the Blue Raiders first five points of the game but Cumberland battled their way back to trail 7-6 with 6:50 to play. The Blue Raiders then managed to go on a 13-4 run over the games next four minutes to take a 20-10 lead and would end the quarter with a 23-15 advantage.

A sluggish offensive start to the second quarter saw the Lindsey Wilson lead dwindle to four points (23-19) at the 7:22 mark of the quarter. This would be the closest Cumberland got to gaining a lead for the rest of the game.

The Blue Raiders then managed to extend their lead back to ten points at 30-20 with 3:54 to play. Lindsey Wilson went on to hold Cumberland without a made field goal for just over four minutes as the teams would trade baskets over the final three minutes of the half to a Blue Raider 38-26 lead.

Hall led the Blue Raiders with 11 points in the half after going 4-of-7 from the field as Huffman added nine points on 3-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

Cumberland shot 36 percent from the floor on 9-of-25 shooting as LWC managed a 33 percent shooting percentage from the floor on 14-of-42 shooting. Lindsey Wilson controlled the glass, grabbing 26 boards to the Phoenix's 19 as the Blue Raiders 13 offensive rebounds led to quality second chance points. LWC also managed seven steals in the half, forcing 15 turnovers that resulted in 17 points.

The Blue Raiders are now a perfect 10-0 when leading at the halfway point of a game this season.

After trading baskets to the 7:14 mark of the third quarter Lindsey Wilson would dominate the next six minutes of the game on the way to a 63-34 lead after outscoring the Phoenix 22-2 over the span.

Cumberland would score the quarter's final five points as LWC would lead by 24 with just ten minutes to play.

Lindsey Wilson would extend their lead to as many as 27 during the final stanza but would ultimately take the game by 22 points at 78-56.

The Blue Raider defense held Cumberland without a double-digit score as Carli Conder-Pinto led the Phoenix with nine points. Britany Miller grabbed eight rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action when they hit the road for a MSC matchup with (RV) Georgetown (Ky.) at 5 p.m. CT in Georgetown, Kentucky.
