Football falls to Marian in NAIA Football Championship Series Semifinals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson football fell 34-24 to Marian (Ind.) in the NAIA Football Championship Series Semifinals today at St. Vincent Field.

The Blue Raiders season comes to an end with a 12-1 record after reaching the program's first national semifinal. Marian (12-0) advances to face Morningside (Iowa) in the national championship game on Dec. 21 in Ruston, Louisiana.

Second-ranked Marian took its first lead of the game with 1:14 left in regulation on a Charles Salary scored on a 10-yard run for the 28-24 lead. The Knights added a touchdown with 19 seconds left to complete the win.

Lindsey Wilson built a 17-0 lead in the first half on the strength of a balanced Blue Raider offensive attack and a stout defense.

The Blue Raiders scored on their first possession as Jared Dougherty hit a 27-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. The Lindsey Wilson defense opened with a bang -- forcing a Marian three-and-out on its first possession. The Knights managed just 14 yards in the first quarter.

Lindsey Wilson extended its lead to 10-0 midway through the quarter with a seven-play, 52-yard drive. Jaylen Boyd punched it in from four yards out for his 11th rushing touchdown of the season.

The Blue Raiders took a 17-0 lead in the early stages of the second quarter. Cameron Dukes scored on a one-yard plunge to cap a 13-play, 81-yard drive.

Marian answered with back-to-back scoring drives to trim the deficit to 17-14. Salary -- who finished with three touchdowns -- scored the Knights' first touchdown and Tristen Tonte added a score to pull Marian with three points at the half.

The Lindsey Wilson defense provided a big play to open the second half. T.J. James picked off Marian quarterback Ethan Darter in the Knights' opening drive of the half.

Lindsey Wilson turned the miscue into points as Del'von Dunn scored on a 10-yard run for a 24-14 lead.

Marian once again responded -- outscoring the Blue Raiders 20-0 over the final 25 minutes.

The Knights used an eight-play 54-yard drive to cut the deficit to 24-21.

The Lindsey Wilson defense made stops in back-to-back Marian drives to keep the Blue Raiders in front. The defense held the Knights out of the endzone on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, stuffing Tonte to keep the three-point lead.

Following a Lindsey Wilson punt, Cordarien Trice recorded his second interception of the season to end a Marian drive in Lindsey Wilson territory with 8:58 left in the game.

The Blue Raiders drove in the ball into Marian territory but a fumble with 5:45 left in the game gave the Knights new life.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game with a 2-1 advantage in turnovers. It marks just the second loss in 53 all-time games that the Blue Raiders lost when winning the turnover battle.

Marian methodically marched down the field for the go-ahead score. The Knights used 4:36 to move 13 plays and 78 yards to take the 28-24 lead with 1:14 left.

Lindsey Wilson outgained the Knights 404-388 during the game. Dukes ended the game 19-of-32 for 175 yards. Jaylen Boyd led the Blue Raiders with 20 carries for 89 yards.

Mason Helton led the Lindsey Wilson defense with 11 tackles while T.J. James added 10 stops and the interception.
