Late game struggles cost Blue Raiders against Life

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season schedule with an 87-85 loss on Senior Day on Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

Five Blue Raiders (21-9, 9-5 Mid-South Conference) finished the game with double-digit points as Jynea Harris set the pace with a team-high 20 points. Reagan Turner and Heidi Huffman both finished with 19 points as J'Nayah Hall added 12 points and Molly Stone managed 10 of her own. Gerda Paulauskaite snagged a game-high 13 rebounds.

A slow start by Lindsey Wilson afforded Life (18-10, 6-8 MSC) a five-point, 12-7 lead over the first six minutes of action. Turner would convert on a three-point play with 3:46 on the clock that pushed the Blue Raiders to take the lead at 13-12. The lead was short lived as Life managed to close out the first ten minutes of action with a 21-15 advantage.

Life would extend their lead to as many as 11 points over the first three minutes of the second frame before the Blue Raiders found their rhythm. Lindsey Wilson would manage a 10-4 run that lasted till the 4:48 mark, trimming the Running Eagle lead to just five.

Trailing 35-30, the Blue Raiders and Life would trade baskets till the 1:41 mark, as LWC would trim the Running Eagle lead to just three points, at 40-37 at the break. The Running Eagle shot an impressive 48.4 percent from the field during the half while LWC struggled, shooting just 31.4 percent.

Life would push their lead to six points in the early stages of the third quarter when the Blue Raiders made just 1-of-7 attempts early in the action. Trailing 47-41, Lindsey Wilson managed to claw their way back to trail by just two points but Life would push their advantage to nine points with 4:47 to play in the period.

Turner would put the team on her back, scoring the Blue Raiders next six points to trail by five with 3:38 on the clock, but Life would answer the surge to maintain their lead. Lindsey Wilson would then use a 7-4 run, four points by Stone and three by Huffman would cut the Running Eagle lead to two.

Harris would convert on a three-point play with seven seconds left in the quarter as LWC would lead 63-62 with ten minutes to play. The lead was the Blue Raiders first since they led 13-12 in the first half.

Harris would continue to push the pace in the fourth as she increased LWC's lead to five with four points via the charity stripe to open play.

Leading 71-68, Lindsey Wilson produced a 10-5 scoring run to take their largest lead of the contest with just over four minutes left in regulation.

Life would respond, scoring nine straight points to regain the lead by one point with 2:32 to play. The Blue Raiders and Life would both capture the lead two more times in the contest until the Running Eagles took a two-point advantage with 10 seconds to play.

Lindsey Wilson would get two shots off during the waning seconds of the game but both attempts just missed as Life would win 87-85.

LWC shot just 35.7 percent from the floor as the Running Eagles managed to shoot an impressive 53.4 percent from the floor.

The Blue Raiders now begin preparations for the MSC Tournament set to begin on March 1 at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.
