Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis opened its Mid-South Conference schedule today with a 6-3 win over No. 19 Cumberlands (Ky.) at the UC Tennis Courts.
The Blue Raiders (1-2, 1-0 in the MSC) won two of three doubles points and four of the six singles matches to win the top-25 battle. Cumberlands (4-4, 0-1) marks the third straight ranked foe for Lindsey Wilson this season.
Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Xavier Vicent Navarro and Santiago Diaz claimed the first point of the day at the second-seeded doubles match with an 8-6 win over Jan Dietrich and Anthony Kwok. The Blue Raiders doubled the team lead as Tiago Almeida and Nicolas Garcia Torrealba beat Aatu Merenheimo and Luis Montull 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Cumberlands avoided the doubles sweep with a 9-8 win in the top-seeded match as Eric Banoub and Martin Barbier outlasted Camilo Erazo and Javier Raya to end doubles play.
Vicent secured the first singles win of the day in the No. 3-seeded match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dietrich to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-1 advantage. The Patriots closed within a team point as No. 41-ranked Barbier defeated Almeida 6-3, 6-2 in the top-seeded match.
The back-and-forth match teetered the Blue Raiders way as 23rd-ranked Erazo beat Merenheimo 6-0, 7-6 (2) in the second-seeded singles match to push the Blue Raiders on the brink of the win, leading 4-2.
Montull kept the Patriots hopes alive with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Raya in the No. 4 match.
Diaz provided the decisive point in the sixth-seeded match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sjoerd Nijssen. Torrealba added a 10-8 superset win after splitting the first two sets with Banoub in the fifth-seeded match to give the Blue Raiders the 6-3 win.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 23, as the Blue Raiders travel to Martin Methodist (Tenn.) in Pulaski, Tennessee.
