Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's tennis won the last four matches to beat upset-minded and third-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) 5-3 in the Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals tonight at the Owensboro Tennis Complex.
The match, which began around 8:30 p.m. CT on Friday, concluded at 1:16 a.m. CT on Saturday. The Lindsey Wilson-Campbellsville match was the final of four semifinal matches of the day -- two women and two men. The tournament was forced indoors due to rains throughout the day in Bowling Green. The limited courts and the length of the previous matches forced the early-morning finish.
Tiago Almeida secured the final point for the Blue Raiders (9-6) in the marathon match with a break of serve to defeat Adrian Sabrojo 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Almeida won three of the final four games of the decisive set to close out the team win.
Camilo Erazo and Xavier Vicent each won their matches just ahead of Almeida to enable the comeback.
Erazo -- ranked No. 30 in the NAIA -- defeated 35th ranked Will True 7-5, 6-4 in the top-seeded match to pull 13th-ranked Lindsey Wilson even at 3-3.
Vicent followed with an impressive comeback of his own. After dropping the opening set 7-5 to Blayze O'Keefe in the second-seeded match, Vicent tied the match at a set apiece with a 6-2 second-set win. O'Keefe turned the momentum in his favor winning the first three games of the third set only to have Vicent win six of the last seven games to give the Blue Raiders their first team lead of the match.
No. 19 Campbellsville (16-7) grabbed an early 2-0 lead, winning at the top two doubles matches.
Cesar Castro and Cristian Perez opened the match with an 8-5 win in the second-seeded doubles match over Vicent and Santiago Diaz. True and O'Keefe increased the lead to 2-0 with an 8-6 win over Erazo and Javier Raya in the No. 1 doubles match.
Almeida and Nicolas Garcia collected the first Lindsey Wilson point of the match in the final doubles contest in a tiebreaker. The Blue Raider tandem beat Adrian Sabrojo and Hercilio Cabieses 7-5 in the tiebreaker to seize some momentum heading into singles action.
Perez quickly answered the Lindsey Wilson win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fourth-seeded match over Diaz to give Campbellsville a 3-1 edge.
Raya led the comeback charge in the sixth-seeded match with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Matus Sevcik. Erazo, Vicent, and Almeida followed with wins to push Lindsey Wilson into next week's title match.
The Blue Raiders face fourth-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.), who upset top-seeded Cumberland (Ky.) 5-0 in the other semifinal match.
Lindsey Wilson and Cumberlands are scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 27, at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green.
