Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's tennis beat fourth-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) 5-2 today in the Mid-South Conference Tournament title match at Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders (10-6) earn the conference's automatic bid into next month's NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Alabama.
No. 13-ranked Lindsey Wilson won two of the three doubles matches and three of the four completed singles matches to win the program's 15th conference tournament title.
Santiago Diaz and Xavier Vicent claimed the first point of the day with a dominating 8-1 win over Aatu Merenheimo and Jan Dietrich in the second-seeded match.
The top-seeded and third-seeded matches both proved to be tightly-fought matches.
Tiago Almeida and Nicolas Garcia prevailed 8-6 over Luis Montull and Anthony Kwok in the third-seeded match to push the Blue Raiders in front 2-0.
The No. 14-ranked Patriots (12-6) salvaged the final doubles point in the top-seeded match as Eric Banoub and Martin Barbier knocked off Camilo Erazo and Javier Raya 8-6.
Cumberlands evened the match in the sixth-seeded singles match. Kwok defeated Steven Espinoza 6-3, 6-4 to momentarily tie the match at 2-2.
Diaz put the Blue Raiders in front for good with a win in the fourth-seeded match. After winning the first set 7-5 over Dietrich, Diaz battled back in the second set, winning three of the last four games to win the match 7-5, 7-5 for the 3-2 Lindsey Wilson lead.
Garcia pushed the Blue Raiders on the brink of the title with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Banoub in the fifth-seeded match. Garcia improves to 10-4 on the season with the win.
Almeida -- ranked 41st in the NAIA -- closed out the win in the third-seeded match. He beat Montull in a hard-fought tiebreaker in the first set and closed out the 7-6 (7), 6-3 win to claim the fifth team win and the title. Almeida also improved to 10-4 on the season, winning his third straight match.
The remainder of the matches were halted after Lindsey Wilson reached five team points.
