No. 12 Women's Basketball defeats Cumberlands 79-68 in MSC action on Saturday

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team picked up a 79-68 Mid-South Conference victory over (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (16-3, 5-1 MSC) were led by Maleigha Oldham who scored a career-high 28 points while surpassing career-highs in field goals (10) and in made three-pointers with four. Lindsey Wilson had three other players reach double figures in the game. Jynea Harris recorded her third double-double of the season scoring 16 points while grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. J'Nayah Hall scored 15 points while Reagan Turner her second double-double this season totaling 13 points with a career-high 11 rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson shot 39.5 percent from the field while Cumberlands (15-4, 3-3 MSC) shot 48.2 percent. The Blue Raiders outrebounded the Patriots 45-34 and held a 32-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Cumberlands scored the first four points of the game before Harris got the Blue Raiders on the board. The Patriots then went on a 6-2 run to increase their lead to 10-4 with 4:26 to play in the quarter. After a made three increased Cumberlands lead to 13-8, Lindsey Wilson scored six-straight points to take its first lead of the game at 14-13. The Patriots regained the lead at 16-14 with a three in the final seconds of the quarter.

Trailing 20-17 early in the second quarter, Lindsey Wilson went on a 10-2 scoring run that last over five minutes to lead 27-22 with 3:20 to play in the first half. The Patriots cut the Blue Raider lead to 31-30 with less than two minutes to play in the half. Lindsey Wilson scored the last four points of the half taking a 35-30 lead.

Harris led the way for the Blue Raiders in the half scoring 12 points and totaling nine rebounds. Turner had eight points at the half, Oldham had seven and Hall added six. Lindsey Wilson shot 40.5 percent from the field while Cumberlands connected on 46.2 percent of their shots. Lindsey Wilson held a 24-17 edge in rebounds at the half with 13 of them being offensive.

The Lindsey Wilson lead got cut to two after the Patriots began the second half with a made three pointer. The Blue Raiders then scored eight of the next 12 points increasing their lead to 43-37 with 7:12 left in the third. After a Cumberlands three trimmed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 45-42, the Blue Raiders went on a 7-2 run increasing their lead to 52-44. The two teams exchanged baskets to end the quarter as Lindsey Wilson took a 58-52 lead into the fourth.

Lindsey Wilson increased its lead to double digits scoring the first four points of the quarter. After the Blue Raiders took a 66-57 lead with 7:39 to play, Cumberlands went on a 9-3 run to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 69-66 with 3:25 left in the game. The Blue Raiders closed out the game scoring 10 of the last 12 points and going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final 2:05.

The Patriots had three players in double figures led by Vilma Covane who scored 18 points while Silvia Veloso and Abbi Douglas each had 12.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Thursday, January 23 when they travel to No. 21 Thomas More (Ky.) for a 5 p.m. CT matchup.
