Free Throws and Strong Defense Lifts Women's Basketball Past Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn. - Consistency from the charity stripe and a strong defensive edge led the (RV) Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team past (RV) Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in the Mid-South Conference opener by a final of 75-60.

The Blue Raiders (4-0, 1-0 MSC) went 27-of-33 from the free throw line, led by Reagan Turner (8-of-9) and Hailey Ison (8-of-10). Lindsey Wilson more than doubled Freed-Hardeman in makes from the line, who went 12-of-14 as a team.

On defense, LWC held FHU, who was averaging 80.6 points per game coming into tonight, to just 60 total. The Lady Lions managed to shoot just 37.2 percent from the field (22-of-59) and an ice cold 20 percent from behind the arc (4-of-20). The Blue Raiders additionally forced 14 turnovers.

Four Lindsey Wilson players managed to score in double-figures tonight. For the fourth-straight game, Turner led the team with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field with the eight made free throws. Ison trailed behind with 14 points on 3-of-4 shooting next to her eight made free throws. Haeli Howard went a perfect 5-of-5 shooting the ball notching 13 points, while Bree Glover tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Rose Mary Jackson led the rebounding effort with six boards alongside nine points.

Freed-Hardeman was led in scoring by Alyssa LeMay and KJ White, who each scored 17 points. Caroline Chambers just missed out on a double-double tonight for FHU, scoring 12 points while grabbing nine boards.

The first quarter of play was slow both ways, but saw Lindsey Wilson corral a slight one point edge with under five minutes remaining. LWC would stretch this small advantage out to a 12-6 lead at the quarters end, with Glover conducting play having six points and three rebounds.

Despite FHU cutting its deficit down to just two points early in the second quarter, the Blue Raiders would never trail the rest of the first half, expanding the lead to a comfortable 10 points at one time. Lindsey Wilson carried a 26-18 lead into the halftime intermission, with Glover and Turner each leading the scoring at six apiece. Freed-Hardeman shot just 24.1 percent from the field in the half (7-of-29).

LWC saw its lead dip down to as low as four points early into the second half, but the Lady Lions were never fully able to claw back into the game. The Blue Raiders kept a consistent hold on high single-digit and low double-digit leads which eventually rolled over into the 15-point victory.
