Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. -- No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis opened up its 2020 season with a 5-1 win over host Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) today at the LMU Tennis Complex.
In the NAIA's new scoring format, the Blue Raiders (1-0) grabbed the doubles point and then won four of the five singles matches to claim the win.
While Lindsey Wilson only needed to win two of the three matches to secure the doubles point, the Blue Raiders won in all three matches.
Steven Espinoza and Santiago Diaz won the first doubles match with a 6-2 win over Sebastian Colla and Fabian Sjokvist in the second-seeded match. Lindsey Wilson took the doubles point in the top-seeded match with Camilo Erazo and Nicolas Garcia's 7-5 win over Jake Tuchmann and Iker Moure.
Even though the doubles point in hand, Tiago Almeida and Xavier Vicent finished off doubles play with an 8-6 tiebreaker win over Nic Goslar and Xavi Marte for the 7-6 (6) win.
Erazo pushed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Moure in the top-seeded singles match.
Lincoln Memorial claimed its lone point of the match in the third-seeded match as Marte defeated Vicent 7-5, 6-4.
The Blue Raiders closed out the match with three straight wins.
Garcia won 7-6 (4), 6-3 over Goslar in the fifth-seeded match for the 3-1 win to push the Blue Raiders within one win of taking the match. Almeida provided the decisive point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sjokvist in the second-seeded match.
With the match decided, Espinoza picked up a 7-5, 7-5 win over Colla in the fourth-seeded match.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, as the Blue Raiders open up Mid-South Conference play at Shawnee State (Ohio) in Portsmouth, Ohio.
