Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team fell just short of No. 24 Cumberlands (Ky.) 69-62 on Saturday afternoon at O. Wayne Rollins Center.
Alera Barbee produced her career high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, with Amelia Hodges following right behind with 17 points on a perfect 8-for-8 free throw shooting.
The Blue Raiders shot below their season average at 31.6 percent, but the Patriots were lights out shooting 54.3 percent. Cumberlands dominated the defensive glass, 23-10 leading to chances to run out before the defense was set. The total rebound disparity was a more even 33-27.
Lindsey Wilson battled in the opening quarter, taking a 18-17 lead from Maleigha Oldham free throws after the opening 10 minutes. The Blue Raider defense forced the Patriots into eight turnovers in the first quarter, applying pressure and making up for their 25 percent field goal percentage.
In an even second quarter, Cumberlands just barely edged out Lindsey Wilson in the scoring department. Both teams shot 42.9 percent in a back and forth first half with the Patriots Channing Lewis catching fire in the quarter to the tune of eight points showing Cumberlands take a 35-33 lead into the half.
Cumberlands started to distance themselves in the third quarter, leading for 9:41 of the ten minutes in the third. The Patriots used the paint as their weapon of choice on the floor, with 14 of their 17 points in the area. The Cumberland lead once swelled to 10, but the Blue Raiders cut the mark to eight going into the fourth 52-44.
Both squads were able to build tempo and trade blows in the fourth quarter, with Lindsey Wilson just outscoring their counterparts in the final quarter 18-17 but the total was not enough to overcome the deficit placed in front of them. Cumberlands ultimately won the contest 69-62.
The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Dec. 15 in Portsmouth, Ohio where they take on Shawnee State at 4:30 p.m. CT at Waller Gymnasium.
