Men's Tennis takes down Pikeville 6-1

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis ran its winning streak to a season-high seven straight with a 6-1 win over visiting Pikeville (Ky.) today at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.

The Blue Raiders (9-3, 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference) captured the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to remain unbeaten in conference play this season.

Tiago Almeida and Joppe van Malderen opened the day with their fifth straight win as a doubles team in a 6-3 win over Fernando Proano and Juan Diego Medina in the third-seeded match.

Lindsey Wilson claimed the first point of the day by winning the second-seeded doubles match. Jan Silhavy and Steven Espinoza notched the 6-3 win over Martin Lorenzo and Valentin Ortiz in their debut match as a pair this season.

The duo becomes the 13th different pair to take a doubles court this season for the Blue Raiders.

With the point in hand, Nicolas Torrealba and Anatoliy Voloshyn fell in a back-and-forth match on court one with Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich 7-5.

In singles, Alzate helped the Bears (2-6, 0-3) pull even after winning in the third-seeded match over Espinoza.

Lindsey Wilson closed with five straight wins.

Van Malderen started the streak with a 6-1, 6-3 over Dedich in the second-seeded singles match to put Lindsey Wilson back in front in the team match.

Silhavy -- ranked 18th in the NAIA in singles -- stretched the lead to 3-1 after blanking Ortiz in the third set on court one. Silhavy won the first set 6-2 only to drop the second set 4-6 to force a third set. With the win, Silhavy improves to 22-6 all-time in his Lindsey Wilson career.

Torrealba provided the decisive point in the team match in the fourth-seeded match. He ran his singles winning streak to six straight with a 6-2, 6-1win over Proano.

Almeida and Voloshyn added straight-set wins on courts five and six to close out the day.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at noon CT on Wednesday, March 23, as the Blue Raiders host No. 16-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) at Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
