Box Score BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Jbias Dawson set a single-game program record as the No. 11-ranked Blue Raiders ran for 275 yards in a 45-28 win over Bluefield (Va.) today at Mitchell Stadium.
In addition to the 275 yards on the ground, Lindsey Wilson (3-1) threw for another 249 yards to post a season-high 524 yards of total offense.
Dawson rushed for 252 yards and three touchdowns during his career day surpassing Blake Ingleton's 241 yards during the NAIA Football Championship Series in 2017. Dawson becomes the 11th Blue Raider in the program's history to rush for at least 100 yards in a game and the third to eclipse 200 yards.
Lindsey Wilson never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first 3-1/2 minutes of the game.
Ethan Cash connected with Michael Burdick on a 14-yard touchdown on the Blue Raiders' first offensive drive to give Lindsey Wilson a 7-0.
Following a Zach Thornton blocked punt to set up the Blue Raiders on the Bluefield 18-yard line, Dawson sprinted up the left sideline on the first play of Lindsey Wilson's second drive for a score and a 14-0 lead.
Bluefield (2-2) refused to go away throughout the game.
The Rams -- who finished with 522 yards of offense -- cut the deficit to 14-7 on Nathan Herstich's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jewels Gray. Herstich, who entered the game leading the NAIA in passing, finished with 467 passing yards, four touchdowns, and an interception.
The Blue Raiders and Rams exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter to help Lindsey Wilson take a 21-14 lead into the half.
Cash and Quantae Hicks connected on a 35-yard touchdown to close out the first-half scoring for the Blue Raiders. Cash ended the game with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns while Hicks finished with a team-high five catches and 85 receiving yards.
The Lindsey Wilson ground attack and back-to-back stops by the Blue Raider defense enabled Lindsey Wilson to extend the lead to 31-14 late in the third quarter. Dawson's second score of the day and a 45-yard field goal by Harris Nichols gave the Blue Raiders a three-score lead.
Again, Bluefield came back, cutting the Lindsey Wilson lead to 31-21 and driving for a chance to trim the deficit to a single score.
That's when the Lindsey Wilson defense made its biggest play of the game.
Herstich completed a short pass to Nate Monroe over the middle but a big hit forced a fumble in Lindsey Wilson territory. Kameron Barnett scooped up the fumble and returned it 70 yards for his first career touchdown to all but secure the win. The defensive score was the second in as many games for the Blue Raiders and gave Lindsey Wilson a 38-21 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
Dawson scored his third touchdown of the day with 6:34 left in the game on a 49-yard run that gave Lindsey Wilson a 45-21 lead and him, the single-game record.
Bluefield tacked on a meaningless touchdown in the waning seconds of the game for the 45-28 final.
Robbie Spickard led the Blue Raider defense with seven tackles while Chevis Elliot recorded his first career interception. Therone Orr finished with five tackles, two tackles for a loss, and a sack. The sack is Orr's 13th of his career which moves him into a tie for third on the program's all-time sacks list.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, September 30, as the Blue Raiders host Faulkner (Ala.) on Homecoming at Parnell Family Stadium.
