Women’s Basketball Come Out on Top Against Cumberland

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated Cumberland on Saturday afternoon with a score of 65-56. 

The game was tied after the first quarter, with a score of 14-14. Cumberland's Maddie Brillhart scored a layup in the final seconds to tie the game. Amelia Hodges and Emily Cox both recorded three point shots and Jordyn Stephens had two assists and three rebounds. Lucy Patterson also tallied three rebounds. The Blue Raiders led for 44.1% of the first quarter. Cumberland shot 42.9% from the field and 40% from the free throw line.

After the first half, Cumberland took the lead with a score of 31-26. Leading in points for the Blue Raiders were Patterson, Cox and Claire Fleming, each with five points during the half. Patterson and Stephens led in rebounds with four apiece. For the Phoenix, Kayla Gordon led in points with nine, as well as with five rebounds along with Faith Colston. Gordon also led in assists with two. Lindsey Wilson shot for 25.8% from the field, 30.8% on three point shots and 75% from the free throw line. Cumberland shot 33.3% from the field, 28.6% on three point shots and 62.5% from the free throw line. 

At the end of the third quarter, the game was tied once again with a score of 44-44. Hodges was leading with nine points and Stephens led in rebound and assists with six and three. Gordon was leading in points for Cumberland with 16 and Lindsey Freeman led in rebounds with eight. Cumberland shot for 33. 3% from the field while Lindsey Wilson shot for 31.3% from the field during the third quarter. 

The game concluded with a score of 65-56, with the Blue Raiders taking the win. Hodges led in points for Lindsey Wilson, recording 15 throughout the game, followed by Janiya Davis who had 12. Patterson, Stephen, Fleming and Taylor Guess each recorded six rebounds and Stephens had three assists. Davis and Cox tallied two blocks each, and Davis recorded 3 steals. For Cumberland, Gordon totaled 21 points for the Phoenix, Freeman had 10 rebounds, Colston, Gordon and Jana Claire Swafford each tallied two assists, and Freeman had two blocks, Mariyah Person recorded three steals as well. Freeman also recorded a double-double during the match. The Blue Raiders and the Phoenix both shot for 31.7% from the field during the game. Lindsey Wilson was 33.3% on three point shots and 79.2% from the free throw line while Cumberland was 16.7% on three point shots and 76.5% from the free throw line. 

The Blue Raiders will be at home again next Thursday, February 1st to take on University of the Cumberlands. The game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Biggers Sports Center and will be broadcasted live on the Lindsey Wilson Sports Network.
