Men’s Golf Defeats Cumberland in Gibson Bay Match Play Championship

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Lindsey Wilson men's golf team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 3-2 in the Gibson Bay Match Play championship match Tuesday at Gibson Bay Golf Course.

The Blue Raiders finished the two-day event going 3-0 after defeating Georgetown (Ky.) and Truett McConnell (Ga.) on Monday.

In the unique format, teams are made up of five players in a head-to-head competition. Each team match is made up of five points. In each individual match, the player with the fewest strokes on each hole wins that hole. The player who wins the most holes, wins the match.

Rio Saigal defeated Bailey Rousseau 4&2. Saigal went up one as the second hole concluded while Rousseau won the next two holes to go 1 up. Saigal then won the next two holes to take the lead 1 up. Saigal managed to pull away on the 14th hole going four up to maintain his victory over Rousseau. 

Toby White fell short to Garrett McMellon 1 up. McMellon won the first two holes to go 2 up. White then won the next two holes to tie the match. After the two halved the next four holes, White won two of the next three holes to go 1 up. White increased his lead to 2 up with a win on 14. McMellon won three of the final five holes for the 1 up victory.

Johan Bredenkamp defeated Patrick Chestnut 3&2. Brendenkamp never trailed a hole to Chestnut going 2 up for the fourth hole. As the match remained 2 up for most of the way, Brendenkamp started to slip away going 3 UP on hole 11. With no response from Chestnut, Brendenkamp managed to win hole 14 going 4 UP and never looking back for the day.  

Adam Hawthorn won 2&1 over Joel Berry. Hawthorn came out strong as he took an early lead going two up after two holes Berry won holes nine and 10 to tie the match. Hawthorn won holes 11, 13, 15 and 16 to take control of the match.

Magus Maahr falls to Justin Reed 5&4. With a stalemate on the first hole. Maahr gained an advantage winning the next two holes. The two exchanged wins on the next two holes. Reed tied the match with wins on holes 10 and 11. Maahr won hole 12 while Reed won hole 13 and took the lead with a victory on 15. Reed increased his lead with wins on 17 and 18.
