Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten With Victory Over Berea

COLUMBIA, Ky.- The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated Berea College (Ky.) Monday night 55-53 in Biggers Sports Center staying perfect at 6-0 to start the season.

The Blue Raiders were led by Sophomore Claire Fleming who posted her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Saniyah Shelton and Taylor Guess were the other Blue Raiders who ended the night in double figures with 10, and 11 respectively. 

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle with both teams trading baskets. Berea went on a 7-3 run that lasted 4:43 to extend the lead 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. Mountaineer Drea Satori led all scores in the first 10 minutes of play with seven points. Fleming led the Blue Raider offense with three points connecting on the only shot made from behind the arc for Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson struck first in the second quarter on a 4-0 run to put the Blue Raiders up 15-13 with 8:30 left in the half. Berea quickly answered, going on a 12-0 run that lasted 4:45 extending the Mountaineer lead 25-15. With 1:15 remaining in the first half, Emily Cox connected on a three-pointer that quickly led to a 7-0 run by the Blue Raiders to end the first half making it 25-22. 

After a Mountaineer three to open the third quarter, the Blue Raiders went on a 6-0 run that lasted 4:34 to tie the game 28-28 with 3:48 left in the third quarter. With 1:56 to play, Fleming connected on a three-pointer to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 35-34, Berea's LynKaylah James answered with a layup putting the Mountaineers back ahead 36-35. Lindsey Wilson ended the quarter on a 7-2 run sparked by another Fleming three pointer, a Guess jumper, and a Janiya Davis layup giving the Blue Raiders a 42-38 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the ball game. 

The fourth quarter proved to be a scoring drought for both teams only scoring in small spurts of two and three points at a time. With 1:25 left to play, the score was tied 51-51 until Guess connected on a three point basket assisted by Shelton at 1:01 to give the Blue Raiders a 54-51 lead. With 00:32 left, Mountaineer, Satori, connected on a jumper cutting the Blue Raider lead to one point. Isabel Garcia connected on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 00:15 left to go up 55-53. Guess blocked the Mountaineers final shot as the Blue Raiders came away with the 55-53 victory. 

The Blue raiders will be back in action on Nov. 22nd, at 3 PM CT in Rio Grande, Ohio to take on Saint Mary-Of-The-Woods College (Ind.) in the Bevo Francis Classic.
