EMORY, Va. Kori Campbell and
Josselinne Campos each captured individual titles at the Wasp Open on Friday hosted by Emory & Henry.
Campbell captured the title at 138 pounds while Campos finished first in the 145-pound bracket. The duo becomes the first two wrestlers in program history to capture individual titles.
Campbell earned a 12-0 tech fall over Gianna Amendola from East Stroudsburg in the first rounds. She then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 13-4 decision over Cumberlands' Annabelle Suto. Campbell picked up an 11-0 tech fall over Southern Virginia's Gracie Blake. She advanced to the finals with a 5-4 decision over D'Youville's Alessandra Elliott. In the finals, she defeated Madison Wellen from D'Youville 6-1
Campos advanced to the semifinals with back-to-back first period pins. She began her tournament needing just 28 seconds to defeat Angelina Hiller from East Stroudsburg. Campos then pinned Presbyterian's Lilly Luttrell in 1:40 to advance to the semifinals. She recorded her third pin in the semifinals needing just 37 seconds to defeat Emory & Henry's Molly Keller. Campos came away with the individual title defeating Presbyterian's Paige Wehrmeiseter 8-4.
Brooks began her tournament with a pin in just 39 seconds over Southern Virginia's Seani Casperson. She then pinned Alexis Brua from D'Youville in the second period to advance to the semifinals. Brooks punched her ticket to the finals with a 7-4 decision over East Stroudsburg's Olivia Palmer. She forfeited in the finals to Presbyterian's Alyssa Mahan.
Audrey Smith went 2-2 in the 117-pound bracket. Smith opened her tournament with a 12-2 tech fall over Marymount's Alexis Deagle. She then fell to East Stroudsburg's Isabella Washington-Vasquez in the quarterfinals. Smith won her first consolation match 15-4 before falling to teammate
Catherine Head.
Head dropped her first match to East Stroudsburg's Alanna Barberio 10-0. In her first consolation match, she pinned Madeline Ridge from East Stroudsburg in the second period before defeating Smith. Head's tournament came to an end falling 3-0 to Presbyterian's Charlee Shuler.
Abigail Vanderheyden earned a 10-0 tech fall over Emmanuel's Jewelysa Funakoshi in the first round in the 131-pound bracket. Vanderheyden advanced to the quarterfinals with a second period pin of East Stroudsburg's Lanxi Hu. She fell to Iyanna Crawford from Pembroke RTC 15-4 in the quarterfinals. Vanderheyden pinned Cumberlands' Asia Fowler in the second period in her first consolation match. Vanderheyden forfeited in her second consolation match.
Bryanne Kaminsky started her tournament at 138 pounds with back-to-back tech falls over Sophia Walls from Lincoln Memorial and Cumberlands' Camarie Cunningham to advance to the quarterfinals. Kaminsky's day came to an end dropping her next two matches Madison Wellen from D'Youville and Sofia Vergara from Emmanuel.
