LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson men's wrestling team competed at the Cumberland Open on Saturday.
Christopher Griel dropped his first match in the 285-pound bracket to Huntingdon's Christion Curry 7-2 before winning four-straight matches in the consolation rounds. Griel pinned
Montreat's Kevin Gonzalez in the first period. In his next consolation match, he picked up a 7-2 decision over Reinhardt's Albert Goodgame. Griel then earned a pair of forfeit victories before falling to Curry again.
Obi Smith fell in his first match in the 141-pound bracket against Kullum Irvin of Brewton-Parker 9-6. Smith then earned a first-period pin of Rio Grande's (Ohio) Phillip Balis and then pinned teammate
Garrett Koestel. Smith's tournament came to an end when he was pinned by Reinhardt's Tyler Barb.
Nicholas Hejke opened his tournament at 157 pounds falling to Life's Jon Peralta Ortiz. Hejke then won his first consolation match with a 6-1 decision over St. Thomas' Kade Clute. He then pinned Reinhardt's Gareth Aderhold in 38 seconds. Hejke's tournament came to a close falling to Life's Zachery Lee.
Arlo Laxton (133), Koestel (141) and
Brandon Irigoyen (165) also competed today going 0-2 in their respective weight classes.
The Blue Raiders work to get ready for the Mid-South Conference Championship scheduled for Friday, Feb. 16 at Ephram White Gym in Bowling Green, Ky.
