Broersma Named Swimmer of the Year; Women's Swimming Finishes Conference Championships in Third

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson women's swim team closed out its stay at the Mid-South Conference championships on Saturday at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.

Seniors Maaike Broersma and Allie Rutherford each made history in the pool and coach Tyler King was named the conference's Women's Assistant Coach of the Year as the Blue Raiders finished third out of the field of seven.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Broersma soared ahead of the competition for her third gold medal of the weekend, posting a school-record, championship-record, and NAIA "A"-cut standard time of 1:58.91. The win is also her second all-time for the event and sixth individual win for her Lindsey Wilson career. Her impressive weekend earned Broersma the title of Mid-South Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year, making her the first in program history to garner the accolade.

Rutherford made waves in the 200-yard butterfly, capturing her fourth consecutive conference title in the event with an NAIA Provisional time of 2:07.52. She joins Jessica MacDonald as the only female swimmers from Lindsey Wilson to win four titles in a single individual event.

Elsewhere for the Blue Raiders, Natalia Gorska finished with all-conference status in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall third and meeting NAIA Provisional standards at 52.48. Her teammates Natascha Evreinoff and Hannah Woyscheszik also swam provisional times in the event as they placed one-two in the "B" final with respective times of 55.08 and 55.26.

Jordyn Minifie (200-yard breaststroke; 2:26.88), Sara Motyl (200-yard breaststroke; 2:31.68) and Jaye Farthing (1,650-yard freestyle; 18:39.59) rounded out Lindsey Wilson's showing of provisional times.

The Blue Raiders wrapped up the weekend with a second-place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Broersma, Evreinoff, Woyscheszik, and Gorska each met provisional standards with their legs of the relay to help Lindsey Wilson earn its fifth all-conference relay of the championship.

The attention now shifts to the 43rd Annual Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, which are currently set for March 6-9 at the Columbus Aquatics Center in Columbus, Georgia. National qualifiers will be announced later this month.
