COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team returned home to Marilyn D. Sparks on Sunday afternoon but dropped both ends of its twin bill to Northwestern Ohio.
The Racers struck early in game one and utilized clutch hitting in game two to help complete the sweep.
Kendall Dailey,
Elizabeth Funk, and
Natalie Wandrie each contributed two hits for the Blue Raiders on the day, including a combined four extra-base hits.
Game One: Lindsey Wilson 1, Northwestern Ohio 11 (5 Innings)
The visitors took advantage of a few infield miscues by Lindsey Wilson and opened up a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
After the Racers tallied two additional runs in the second frame, the Blue Raiders found a spark from the middle of their lineup. Wandrie popped up a rare infield-double, then was subsequently plated off the bat of
Katie Lorenz to trim the deficit to 6-1.
Despite being held scoreless in the third inning, Northwestern Ohio put the game away with a crooked five-run fourth frame.
K'Asia Palmer (L, 1-1) got the nod to start for Lindsey Wilson in the circle, her first of the season, and
Grace Adams fired four complete innings of relief and retired two on strikes.
Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 1, Northwestern Ohio 3
The second outing of the afternoon featured solid defensive play from both team, but a timely hit by the Racers late ultimately proved to be the difference.
Northwestern Ohio scored its first run in the top leg of the first inning and maintained a 1-0 lead through the fifth before tacking on two insurance runs in the sixth.
Funk provided the home side's lone run of the game with her first home run of the season to straight-away center field in the bottom of the sixth.
Lindsey Wilson received a solid showing from
Savannah Robbins (L, 0-1) on the rubber. The junior made her first start of the season and went 5.1 innings, surrendered two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
The Blue Raiders take Monday off before host Indiana-Purdue Columbus at 3 and 5 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 12.
