3/9/2024 8:10:00 PM

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Junior Fabio Martin Rojo captured his first individual national title and the Lindsey Wilson men's swimming team finished ninth at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships on Saturday.

The Blue Raiders totaled 130 points for the meet and were the second-highest Mid-South Conference school in the final team rankings.

Martin Rojo opened the afternoon session for Lindsey Wilson in the 1,650-yard freestyle, by far the longest event of the week. The Spaniard swam neck-and-neck with top-seeded Mate Dort of Life (Ga.) from the beginning, but in the end, it came down to a margin of 0.07 seconds for Martin Rojo to claim the championship and set a new program record with a time of 15:43.95.

Martin Rojo becomes only the second male swimmer in Lindsey Wilson history to win a national title, joining Calvin Coetzee. The newly christened national champion earns his third All-American finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle and his seventh overall as an individual.

Teammate Ethan Butler also claimed All-American status in the mile, placing sixth with a season-best mark of 16:09.63.

Also in the pool for Lindsey Wilson on Saturday afternoon was Dario Soria (16th, 1:52.20) in the 200-yard backstroke, Clinton Eales (13th, 2:04.62) in the 200-yard breaststroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jose Rivas, Max van Schagen, Martin Rojo and Eales (12th, 3:06.06).
