Swimming Welcomes Asbury and Tennessee Southern for Tri-Meet

1/17/2025 1:14:00 PM

COLUMBIA, Ky. – After a near-two-month break from competition, the Lindsey Wilson men's and women's swim teams are set to return to the pool at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday, January 18 to host Asbury (Ky.) and Tennessee Southern.

The Blue Raiders last competed in late November at the Total Performance Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College (Ohio), where a total of 16 school records were broken, and nine NAIA "A"-cut standards were met.

On the women's side, Maaike Broersma, Kirsten de Goede, and Nathalie Medina posted three individual program records, apiece, and were key pieces for Lindsey Wilson's five record-breaking relays alongside Sara Motyl, Hannah Woyscheszik, and Natalia Gorska.

Broersma actively holds the NAIA's fastest times in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. De Goede leads the way in the 100-yard freestyle, and, as far as the relays, the Blue Raider women rank first in the nation in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle.

Entering Saturday, Motyl sits 1.97 seconds behind Ronni Borders' nine-year-old record in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Natascha Evreinoff needs 1.62 seconds shaven off her time in the 100-yard butterfly to surpass Alexis Kessler's all-time mark set in 2018.

As for the men, Max van Schagen, Sergio Ybarra, and Dan Spinola collected individual school records in Ohio. Ybarra's time of 15:27.55 in the 1,650-yard freestyle is currently best in the NAIA. However, Saturday will not feature the mile-long swim. Instead, the longest event will be the 1,000-yard freestyle, an event Ybarra set the program record for back on October 12, 2024.

Van Schagen's record came in the 50-yard freestyle, – 20.76 seconds – besting his own previous record set on November 16, 2023. The junior is only 0.54 seconds off Calvin Coetzee's top time in the 100-yard freestyle.

Spinola conquered the 100-yard breaststroke record by 0.03 seconds and became only the second swimmer in program history to swim the event in under 56 seconds.

Another event to watch for on the men's side is the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. Dario Soria's best time of 50.86 in the shorter of the two races is just 0.37 seconds off Will Thilwind's record.

Saturday will be the first meeting between Lindsey Wilson and Asbury since October 21, 2022. Both the Blue Raider men and women have won back-to-back duals against the Eagles. Tennessee Southern, on the other hand, has gone head-to-head with Lindsey Wilson three times and the Blue Raiders have come out on top in each instance.

Live coverage of Saturday's meet will be provided by the Lindsey Wilson Sports Network.
