Women’s basketball falls to the No. 10 Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.-  Women's basketball falls to the No. 10 Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 76-56.

Leading the offense for the Blue Raiders was Taylor Guess who also led all scorers with 27 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Jarie Thomas was the second- leading scorer for Lindsey Wilson contributing eight points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. 

Cumberlands started the game on a 7-0 run that lasted 0:55 ended by a three point basket by Guess with 7:06 on the clock. Jarie Thomas got in on the offensive action knocking down a mid-range jumper that made the score 7-5 with 5:56 on the clock. At 4:59, Natalie Gentry came off the bench knocking down a jumper cutting into the Patriot lead, 10-7. Lindsey Wilson ended the first ten minutes of action scoring the final three points thanks to an and-one from Guess keeping the Blue Raider deficit to 17-14. 

The second quarter started with empty possessions from both teams with the Patriots striking first, but the Blue Raiders answering back. The first three minutes consisted of back and forth trading baskets with contributions from Guess and Emily Cox who each knocked down a jumper and Guess who added two free throws making the score 24-20 in favor of the Cumberlands. With 3:22 left before the half, the Patriots went on an 11-2 run holding the Blue Raiders to one made bucket from Guess, giving the Cumberlands a 40-26 edge headed into the locker room. 

Claire Fleming opened up the scoring in the second half converting on a contested layup with 9:13 to go in the third. Patriots Leeanna McNulty responds back with a layup at 8:50 to push the lead back out to 42-28. Guess answers at 7:58 knocking down a jumper and picking up her 18th point of the game on Saniyah Shelton's third assist. The Patriots ended the quarter on a 20-8 run giving them a 62-38 lead headed into the final ten minutes of action 

Lindsey Wilson outscored the Patriots 18-14 in the fourth quarter but turnovers and rebounding margins proved to be too much as the Blue Raiders ended with eight turnovers and was out-rebounded 49-18, yielding the 76-56 final score. 

Women's Basketball will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. CST in Biggers Sports Center to take on the No. 12 Wildcats of Bethel (Tenn.). The men will follow immediately after.
