No. 7 Football Opens MSC Play With 37-13 Victory at No. 11 Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team defeated  No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.) 37-13 to open Mid-South Conference play Saturday at Toyota Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (5-0, 1-0 MSC) out gained the Tigers (3-2, 0-1) 455-394 and held a 275-168 edge in passing yards. This marks the third time this season that Lindsey Wilson has totaled over 450 yards of offense. The Blue Raiders scored four rushing touchdowns in a game for the first time since October 5, 2024.  Lindsey Wilson was  10-of-14 (71.4%) on third downs in the victory. Defensively, the Blue Raiders recorded a pair of turnovers with an interception and a fumble.

Davontaye Saunders totaled over 150 rushing yards for the third straight game. Saunders ran for 153 yards on 24 carries with three touchdowns. He becomes the first Blue Raider since Jbias Dawson in 2023 to score three rushing touchdowns in a game. Tate Rice threw for a career-high 275 yards, going 23-30 with one touchdown. Khia Sherrard caught nine passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Sherrard has now surpassed 150 receiving yards in two games this season.

Cameron Rankins led the Lindsey Wilson defense with eight tackles, while Troy Churchill recorded a sack. Lee Levingston recorded four tackles and had an interception, while Lou Burchfield forced and recovered a fumble.

The two teams traded punts on their first possessions. Lindsey Wilson struck first on a 10-play, 68-yard drive that took 5:53. Saunders capped off the drive, punching it in from one yard out, giving the Blue Raiders a 7-0 lead with 3:20 to play in the first quarter. On its next drive, Georgetown had the ball at the Lindsey Wilson 28 after back-to-back plays. The Blue Raiders were called for pass interference on the next play, putting the ball at the 13. Lindsey Wilson forced three incompletions to hold Georgetown to a 32-yard field goal, making it 7-3 with 1:55 left in the first.

Saunders ran for 35 yards on the first play of the Blue Raider drive to the Tigers' 43. On the next play, Rice found Sherrard for 35 yards to the Georgetown eight. Stevin Mack ran in from nine yards on the first play of the second quarter to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 14-3 with 14:54 to play in the half.

Georgetown responded with a 45-yard rushing touchdown from Daniel Kamara, trimming the Blue Raider lead to 14-10. Lindsey Wilson then put together a 9-play, 96-yard drive, capped off by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Rice to Sherrard, increasing the lead to 21-10 with 6:15 remaining in the half. Levingston intercepted a Gehrig Slunaker pass, returning it to the Blue Raider 42 with 3:31 to play before halftime. The Blue Raiders were unable to capitalize on the turnover, going three-and-out. Jadan Burns connected on a 31-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, giving Lindsey Wilson a 24-10 lead into the locker room.
Lindsey Wilson out gained Georgetown 293-208 in the first half and averaged 7.5 yards per play. The Blue Raiders totaled 242 passing yards in the first 30 minutes and were 5-of-7 on third down.

The Tigers missed a 50-yard field goal, giving Lindsey Wilson the ball on its 33. On the third play of the drive, Saunders ran for a 58-yard touchdown to give the Blue Raiders a 30-10 lead with 5:08 to play in the third quarter.

Georgetown capped off a 16-play, 51-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal from Nathan Craft, making it 30-13 with 13:47 to play. Saunders capped a 17-play, 76-yard drive that took 10:46 with a one-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Raiders a 37-13 lead with 3:01 to play. The 17-play scoring drive is the longest scoring drive of the season for Lindsey Wilson.  The Blue Raiders forced the second Georgetown turnover on the next drive. Burchfield forced and recovered a fumble at the Lindsey Wilson four with 1:22 remaining.

The Blue Raiders are back in action next week, hosting (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. CT at Parnell Family Stadium.
