Blue Raiders Defeat Florida Memorial 73-60

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- Lindsey Wilson defeated Florida Memorial 73-60 on Monday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center. 

Claire Fleming led the offense posting 13 points on 5-of-7 from the field, 1-of-1 from behind the arc, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Taylor Guess contributed 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting while knocking down 4-of-4 chances at the free throw line. Meadow Tisdale and Jarie Thomas rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points apiece. Saniyah Shelton led on the glass with 10 rebounds while tacking on six points and three assists. 

Lindsey Wilson struck first with 8:20 on the clock as Fleming stepped to the charity stripe, knocking down both free throws for an early 2-0 lead. Florida Memorials' Jazzlyn Givens evened the field at 7:11 for a 2-2 score. Both teams traded a bucket until Amelia Hodges knocked down a three on an assist from Shelton at 5:43 to take a 7-4 advantage. The three from Hodges sparked a 14-2 run that lasted from 5:43 to 0:33, growing the Blue Raiders advantage to 18-6 to close out the first quarter.

Both teams opened the quarter trading buckets with Emily Cox answering Givens' jumper with one of her own at 8:57 to push the lead to 20-8. WIth 6:48 remaining in the half, Guess found an open Thomas for three to grow the lead to 23-9, right at a minute later at 5:48 Guess connected with Thomas again for another three to increase the separation to 26-9. At 5:23, the Lions went on a 9-2 run that lasted from 5:23 to 3:44, cutting the Blue Raiders lead down to 28-18. Hodges knocked down two free throws with 0:12 left in the half to push the Blue Raiders ahead 38-27 headed into the break. 

Tisdale got the second half offense going with two free throws at 9:33 after going up for the put back on an offensive rebound. Hodges was able to find a cutting Thomas through the lane for an easy lay in, growing the advantage to 42-27 for LWU. Once again, both sides were trading buckets until Tisdale found her footing in the paint and finished a tough and-1, knocking down the free throw and shifting momentum towards the Blue Raiders once again for a 47-31 score with 8:04 to play. Lindsey Wilson closed out the final five minutes of the third quarter on an 11-7 run that grew the lead to 61-44 headed into the final ten minutes of action. 

Florida Memorial started the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run until Guess stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper at 8:29 drawing a score of 63-49. At 7:17 Guess went to the free throw line and knocked down both chances with the next bucket coming from Isabel Garcia at 5:15 to increase the score to 68-51. Lindsey Wilson went on to defeat Florida Memorial 73-60. 

Women's hoops will be back in action on Saturday to face the Racers of Murray State (Ky.) in an exhibition at 2 P.M. CT inside the CFSB Center.
