Seven Blue Raiders Earn VSN All-American Honors

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Seven Lindsey Wilson football student-athletes earned Victory Sports Network All-American honors, VSN announced on Monday.
 
The VSN NAIA Football team is compiled by Jason Dannelly of the Victory Sports Network. Nominations are automatically taken from each All-Conference team in the NAIA. Input on the selections comes from coaches, SIDs, and media members around the NAIA. The final selections are made by Dannelly.
 
Davontaye Saunders was named to the first team while Max Gainey, Khia Sherrard, and Larry Montgomery earned second team honors. Kahleb Bridges and Cameron Rankins earned third team honors, while Tate Rice picked up honorable mention status.
 
This marks the third All-American honor for Saunders this season. The junior from Eminence, Kentucky, ran for a program-record 1,579 yards this season. Saunders also broke the program record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 20. He averaged a program-best 131.6 rushing yards per game and set the program record for rushing yards in a game with 299. Nationally, he ranked second in the NAIA in rushing yards and in rushing yards per game. Saunders sits fifth in the country in rushing touchdowns.
 
Gainey, of Louisville, Kentucky, caught 61 passes for 939 yards with seven touchdowns. Gainey's 939 yards set a new program record for season receiving yards, while his 61 receptions are the second-most in a season. He also set the program record for receiving yards per game with 78.3. Gainey was one of six players in the NAIA this season to return two punts for touchdowns.
 
Sherrard and Elizabethtown, Kentucky native, caught 44 passes for 854 yards and 12 touchdowns. His 12 touchdowns led the team, and he ranked second on the Blue Raiders in receiving yards. Sherrard broke the program record for receiving yards in a game with 215 on August 28 against Texas Wesleyan. His 12 touchdowns are the second-most in a season in program history and rank seventh in the NAIA.
 
Montgomery of Louisville, Kentucky, anchored an offensive line that allowed just 13 sacks in 11 games. The Blue Raiders averaged 41.7 points per game, leading the Mid-South Conference and ranking 10th in the NAIA. Lindsey Wilson ranked second in the conference and 12th in the NAIA, averaging 204.9 rushing yards per game.
 
Bridges of Atlanta, Georgia, totaled 62 tackles this season, ranking second on the Blue Raiders. He led the team with five interceptions and 12 pass breakups. Bridges set the program record for interceptions in a game with four against Indiana Wesleyan in the Second Round of the NAIA Football Championship Series. His 12 pass breakups tied the program record for most in a season, while the five interceptions tied for the third-most in a season.
 
Rankins led the Blue Raiders and the MSC in tackles with 85 this season. The Hartsville, Tennessee native was third on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss. Rankins recorded 2.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one interception.
 
Rice completed 64.5 percent of his passes (180-279), throwing for 2,464 yards. The freshman from Manchester, Kentucky, threw for 29 touchdowns and had just four interceptions. Rice averaged 205.3 yards per game and had two or more touchdowns in eight games this season. He threw for over 300 yards in a pair of games with a high of 382 against Indiana Wesleyan. Rice's 29 touchdowns led the MSC.
