Women's Duo Earns National Titles: de Goede Sets NAIA Record in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. – Maaike Broersma and Kirsten de Goede each claimed national championships for the Lindsey Wilson women's swimming team on day three of the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships.

Broersma claimed her second individual title of the week in the 100-yard backstroke as she finished over two seconds ahead of second place and two places ahead of teammate Natalia Gorska, who garners All-American status in the event for the first time in her career. Broersma's championship is the third of her Lindsey Wilson tenure in the 100-yard backstroke. She and Gorska are the only women's swimmers in school history to earn All-American honors in the race.

De Goede made NAIA history during the morning session, coasting in her preliminary heat of the 200-yard freestyle and clocking and national-record time of 1:47.34. Despite adding just over a second to her finals time later in the evening, de Goede still dominated from start to finish to win her first individual national championship and become the women's program's first ever national titlist in the 200-yard freestyle.

The Blue Raiders' team of Broersma, Sara Motyl, Nathalie Medina, and de Goede closed the night with a runner-up finish in the 400-yard medley relay and earned another school record in the process after touching the wall at 3:44.50.

Additionally, Motyl placed 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:05.74.

With the final day of competition around the corner, Lindsey Wilson sits in fourth place but only 2.5 points behind Mid-South rival Cumberlands (Ky.) for third.

Saturday's schedule of events includes the 200-yard backstroke (Broersma), 100-yard freestyle (de Goede, Gorska, Natascha Evreinoff, and Emma Verkuijl), 200-yard breaststroke (Motyl), 200-yard butterfly (Medina), 1,650-yard freestyle (Medina), and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
