BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team defeated No. 3 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) Friday to capture the Mid-South Conference Tournament championship at the Warren County Tennis & Sports Facility.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders (15-3) capture the program's 18th conference tournament title and earn the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship beginning May 13 in Mobile, Alabama.
Lindsey Wilson earned the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead over the Phoenix.
Lucas Marques and
Marcal Miret defeated Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov at No. 2 doubles. Cumberland's Paul Daniel-Meyer and Daniel Wessels (No. 23 doubles in ITA) evened up doubles play defeating
German Delcanto and Aldo -Randazzo 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Hans Schubert and
Santiago Passoni (ranked No. 13) clinched the point for Lindsey Wilson with a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Vitor Ferreira and Julian Parada in the top-seeded doubles match.
Cumberland's lone point of the match came at No. 2 singles with Ferreira (No. 43) defeated Delcanto (No. 39) 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match at 1-1. Schubert (No. 46) gave the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wessels (No. 36) at No. 1 singles.
Randazzo pushed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Parada at No. 6 singles. Passoni (No. 13) clinched the championship for the Blue Raiders with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Hassan Ammar.
The NAIA National Tournament field is scheduled to be announced on April 29 on the NAIA website.
