Women’s Wrestling Goes 2-1 on First Day of NWCA/USMC National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -  The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's wrestling team posted a 2-1 record on the first day of the  NWCA/USMC Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships at the UNI-Dome on Friday.

The Blue Raiders opened the day with a 28-18 victory over No. 13 Ottawa (Kan.) before falling 22-20 to No. 4 William Penn (Iowa) in the quarterfinals. Lindsey Wilson advanced in the consolation bracket with a dominant 39-9 victory over No. 10 Cumberlands (Ky.).

Aynsley Fink (No. 5 at 103 pounds) gave the Braves  a 4-1 lead with a 12-1 tech fall over Skyler Randolph to begin the dual. Lindsey Wilson then won the next four weight classes to take a 17-5 lead. Reagan Thomas ( No. 13 at 110) gave the Blue Raiders a 5-4 lead with a 10-0 tech fall over Alejandra Mezano at 110 pounds. In the 117-pound bout, Grace Lashinsky (No. 5 at 117) earned a 9-1 decision over Addison Saporito (No. 18 at 117). Following an Ottawa forfeit at 124 pounds, Jeila Ramos (No. 5 at 131) picked up a 10-0 tech fall over Kaydence Bonewell.

Ottawa earned a 6-4 decision at 138 pounds to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 18-8. Kori Campbell (No. 8 at 145) pinned Kaitlyn Thorn (No. 19 at 145). Ottawa rattled off back-to-back pins at 160 and 180 pounds, trimming the Blue Raider advantage to 23-18 heading into the final bout. Hayeni Costa (No. 8 at 207) secured the victory for Lindsey Wilson with a second-period pin of Kena Leonard (No. 19 at 207).

Havanna Hampl opened the dual with a 10-9 decision over Liilian Zapata at 103 pounds. Thomas then earned a 10-9 decision over Avy Perez (No. 7 at 110) to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 6-2. Mia Palumbo gave William Penn a 7-6 lead with a pin of Callie Payton (No. 9 at 117). Kamilah Brooks (No. 8 at 124) put Lindsey Wilson back in front 9-8 with a 3-2 decision over Victoria Baez Dilone (No. 2 at 124).

Kendall Bostelman (No. 4 at 131) gave the Statesmen an 11-10 lead with an 11-7 decision over Ramos. Lexie Ritchie (No. 7 at 138) earned an 8-0 decision over Ana Vilar giving Lindsey Wilson a 13-11 advantage. Campbell increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 17-11 with a 10-0 tech fall over Maeley Elsbury. Back-to-back pins by William Penn gave them a 21-17 advantage. Costa earned a 5-4 decision against Phoebe Burt (No. 7 at 207) as the Blue Raiders came up short 22-20.

The Blue Raiders took control of the dual, winning the first seven weight classes with six pins and one decision as Lindsey Wilson took a commanding 33-1 lead. Randolph pinned Dutchess King (No. 15 at 103) to open the dual. Thomas recorded a pin at 110 pounds while Lashinsky earned a 12-8 decision at 117 pounds.

Brooks pinned Sophia Satterfield in just 24 seconds at 124 pounds. Ramos pinned Mary Jane Porter (No. 19 at 138) while Brielle Bibla (No. 13 at 138) pinned Ruth Jimenez at 138 pounds.  Ritchie pinned Alivia Ming (No. 17 at 145) in 48 seconds at 145 pounds. The Patriots took home wins at 160 and 207 pounds, while Alyssa Pinkston picked up a forfeit win at 180.

The Blue Raiders return to the mat on Saturday, taking on No. 9 Texas Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m. CT with a trip to the fifth-place match on the line.
