Brooks and Campbell Advance to Semifinals of NAIA Championship; Women’s Wrestling Eighth

WICHITA, Kan. - Kamilah Brooks and Kori Campbell advanced to the semifinals following the first day of the NAIA Women's Wrestling Championship on Friday at the Heartland Credit Union Arena.
 
The Blue Raiders totaled 55.5 points to sit in eighth following the first day of competition. Life (Ga.) sits atop the team standings with 112.5 points, while Grand View (Iowa) is second with 108.5 points.
 
Brooks opened competition in the 124-pound bracket with a 9-2 decision over Jazmine Turner of Dickinson State (S.D.) in the first round. She advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 decision over Southern Oregon's Kaylee Annis. Brooks then defeated Alyssa Randles of Providence to advance to the semifinals. She will square off against Indiana Tech's Rose Kaplan Saturday morning for a trip to the finals.
 
Campbell received a bye in the first round at 145 pounds and pinned Niah Smith of Waldorf (Iowa) in 1:57 in round two. She then earned a 5-3 decision against Cumberlands' Genesis Gilmore in the quarterfinals. Campbell takes on Jordan Suarez of Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the semifinals on Saturday.
 
Grace Lashinsky began her tournament at 117 pounds with a pin of Maraih Dillard of Wayland Baptist. Lashinsky then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-0 tech fall over Taylor Hood of Midland (Neb.). She was defeated 10-0 by Zao Estrada of Missouri Valley to drop to the consolation bracket. Lashinsky won her first consolation match with a 10-0 tech fall over Chloe Herrick of Baker (Kan.). She looks to continue her run through the consolation bracket on Saturday against Joely Slyter of Providence.
 
Jeila Ramos began her tournament with a bye in the first round of the 131-pound bracket. Ramos pinned Olivia Messerly of Campbellsville in 1:13 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, she dropped a 6-2 decision to Life's Sarah Savidge. Ramos advanced in the consolation bracket with a pin of Mary Jane Porter of Cumberlands (Ky.). She opens Saturday taking on Larissa Kaz of Hastings (Neb.).
 
Hayeni Costa dropped her first match at 207 pounds to Selena Mares of Grand View. Costa then rattled off three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. She earned a 12-2 tech fall over Westcliff's (Calif.) Fernanda Canedo. Costa then picked up a 6-2 decision over Doane's Jessica Rodriguez. She then earned a 13-8 decision over Naomi Duenas of Cumberlands. Costa faces Life's Madeline Welch in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.
 
The Blue Raiders return to the mat on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT for the final day of the NAIA National Championship at Heartland Credit Union Arena.
